Hi guys/gals. I have the opportunity to buy a 95 esi 2.0l 16v DOHC (is this the same engine as the tsi) with a hahn racecraft stage one 16g turbo kit on it. Whats the difference here between the stock tsi? currently the car does not run. I dont know why, and niether does he. It just died on him one day, and it has been parked in his driveway ever since. I can get it for under $1,000 easily pry for like 500-800. Would it be worth it to get it and take it in and get a new motor/head whatever the problem is and get it fixed? What do you guys think it would run (price wise) for me to take it to a place and get the work done. I know it might be tough to answer my question provided the little info on damage done to the car.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

The Esi 420a powerplant is not that good of a platform for a turbo kit. Especially since the car is not running and nobody knows why, you might wind up spending a lot of money to get that sucker running. Find a decent price for a TSI or GSX. It's a much better starting platform for performance and much less of a headache. (well aside from the common DSM problems)

I disagree.

For that price? Buy it and part it out.

Or what you can do, or what i've done in the past, is buy, fix it, replace the whole block and head and everything for $200-$500 (you can pick up an engine there for cheap), turn around and sell it and make some money on it. You can easily make 2-3 grand on these cars when they have bad heads/blocks!! :thumb: :thumb:

I'm with you on that, even though it is a Neon R/T motor it still could have made power. There are quite a few of fellow DSM tuners that are using that turbo kit. If you search I'm sure you could get some feedback from people who actually have experience with the kit. I recall seeing a few that have had work done to them up to a rebuilt motor and can take boost quite well.

Parting out that turbokit would be easy, there are a ton of DSMtuners I know wouldn't mind getting their hands on that kit for a good price. For the price that you say you could buy it for, it would be worth it all in all since DSMers are always looking for replacement parts.

I say pick it up running or not running. Does it even have battery power? If so, you could probably jump the car and see what ECU codes it is throwing. Since it is a OBDII, I believe a local AutoZone would check it out for free if its throwing codes. See if you could get more information about it and we'll go from there.

I say buy it for that price, fix it and then do as you wish. I traded my esi for a tsi just because I got a heck of a deal. This doesn't sound like a bad deal either. For that price you'd have the car and a turbo kit. Take and either buy a stock motor to thow in or spend a little more and rebuild it with some forged internals and raise boost. All in all it's up to you and your budget. The 420A is quite a capable engine.
