is there anyway to tell if my ecu in my 94 gsx is an eprom without having to take it out and look? let me know thanks.

You have to be able to look at the caseing and It will have an E on it. or take it apart and see if it has a real big black chip in one of the corners that will have some numbers on it and an E. Atleast thats where its at on 2g's.

Its kinda worth it to take it out and look, just so you know if it is, or is not.

It only takes 5 mins to take it out to find out.

Not all the 1g Eproms have the E on the casing. Some of the 1g's that do have the E on them are not Eproms.

The only for sure way to tell is by taking them out and looking at the board.

ok. i took off the two panels on the side and took out the bolts holding the ecu in place but had to stop cause it was getting dark. so now i have to take out the four plugs on the bottom of the ecu is there a way to tell which ones go where when i go to put them back in or should i mark them? and i also read that i should disconnect my battery for safety measures. after i have the ecu out and in hand how do i take off the casing and im guessing im looking for a chip in one of the corners that has a E on it along with other letter or numbers? by taking my ecu out and taking the casing off is there a possibility of me messing anything up therefore causing the car to run abnormally or not run at all? so basically can i hurt anything by doing this.

Nope, unclip the three plugs on the bottom(they only go back in one way). Pull the ecu out and take the four phillips screws off the case and pull the cover off. Look for the Eprom chip in the bottom right corner, and also check the capacitors for leakage.

Another thing i would mention is using a flathead screwdriver as it seems to work better than finding a tight fitting phillips to remove the case ;-)
my 93 GSX has an Eprom with an E on the cover but i read somewhere that 93 Eclipses didnt get Eproms let alone a 6 bolt motor which i have both
Just my .02 cents

Not sure about the eprom, but your car did not come factory with that 6 bolt, lucky you though!

You guys need to stop arguing. All eprom ecu's came with an E on the cover. All non-eprom ecu's did not come with an E on the cover. The covers get swapped though and that is where you find the problem of an eprom not having an E or a non-eprom having an E.

I know if 90's were Eprom they would NOT have an E in the corner, that little corner would be blank. 91-94's Would have the E in the corner if they were eprom. If they were not it would have an M or another letter in that little corner.

Read this on vfaq awhile back.

Umm no you are completely wrong. Don't post if you have no idea what your talking about.

Lol ROFL

Seriously after owning 40 plus 1g's I have seen my fair share of ECU's and got all excited seeing the E on the cover only to open it up and not see an eprom chip. :toobad:

You would already know this (hint, hint) if you had used the FAQ Locator. Read Todd Day's EPROM check webpage.

One fact that is not mentioned on this page is how to quickly check ECUs *after 1990* for an EPROM. There is a label on the top of the ECU (not the sides). If this label has an "E" in the lower right-hand corner, you have an EPROM. If it has an "M" or "T" in that corner, you do not have an EPROM. 1990 owners have to open the ECU to find out, as there are both EPROM and non-EPROM 1990 ECUs.

Galant VR-4 owners, again, have an edge - owing to the low production volume of that model, GVR4s are almost guaranteed to have an EPROM.

The question is answered on the 1000aaq page, a picture has been posted, and proper advice (open it) has been given.

Enough.
