was it knockin or anything before this happeend? it could be a broken connecting rod, or your timing belt broke or slipped and your piston is hitting the valve. its not seized becuase then you weoundt be able to turn it at all. i would check out your timing belt

^ yup. sounds like time for a new engine or a rebuild. Unless something has happened to your clutch/flywheel/trans. I had a car that had an input shaft bearing break on the tranny and it did something like that. Is it manual or auto?

Like previously stated its most likely your timing is messed up. Best thing to do is get in there and verify whether or not it is messed up. Starting off with checking and verifying the simple things is best way to go about figuring out engine trouble.

it is a manual transmission, and if a rod went through the engine where should I look to find out if it is the connecting rod, and should I remove the engine or can I find it with it in the car

Can you push or tow the car with the tires moving like its in neautral? If you can its not in your drivetrain.
Id say it jumped time, but it could be something inside your block
If it was a connecting rod more than likely it didnt go all the way through the block, so the only way to look for it would be to either pull the engine and tare it apart or raise the engine enough to take the oil pan off and inspect it.(im assuming you know how to raise an engine still in the car)

so you dont have to remove the engine to get the oil pan off, and when the oil pan is off can I see the conecting rods or is there more to remove

No you dont have to completely remove it,but you do have to unhook some stuff and raise the engine up.
Did you try to push the car?Look into your timming?I would look at those first there easier to check.

if you look at all those things and everything is good, it might be seized up...so AS A LAST RESORT you can try this: put the car in gear, push in the clutch, have someone push the car till you get like 5 mph or so, then pop the clutch. if the engine IS seized, this will break it loose. then try to start it and see if it at least cranks over.

I have had 2 connecting rods push a hole in the block. The car would be pouring oil on the ground. As stated a few times, pull the timing cover and check your belt, I can almost guarantee that you will find your problem. Last time I saw an engine that would only go so far either way, it had broken valves in the cylinder stopping the piston to reach TDC.

Pop the valve cover, discover the bad news. I wouldn't roll the car at 5mph and do it, you could stress out the bearing, just roll it in neutral and then in a gear, if it doesn't roll in a gear, it's more than likely the engine. You'll need a new head and probably new pistons, good times.

Did this happen while you were trying to start it? Mine did. Kind of sinister, goes from won't start, to won't turn over at all...

I have not been on for a while but new things too tell about the rotating engine problem I removed the valve cover and still still rotated it with a breaker bar and it stops and makes a cling noise at the top of the engine could this be a stuck valve and if it is do I have to pull the head

well check your timing belt because it sounds like you have a valve hitting the piston. see if the timing marks line up on your timing belt. two marks on the cam gears and the crank pulley.
