I have a '97 GST and I want to get the engine rebuilt. How much do you guys think a dealership will charge for a full rebuild including valve stem seals, piston rings, motor mounts, a timing belt job, spark plugs and wires, and whatever else comes with a rebuild? Thank you.

Looking at a good $3000+ right there. Believe me i know from experience, when the bottom end of my last motor went, i tried to rebuild just the bottom end and i believe it was somewhere around $1700+...depends on the machine shop. I bought myself a used motor with 25k miles from a 99 GST. Finding a used 7 bolt motor is a pain in the ass..many of the ones are in bad shape and have alot of miles. I quickly learned that after 2 months of search, i went through 2 motors before i finally bought this one because those motors were either had the wrong sensors (95-97 wont fit in a 98) or they were in bad shape. The head out of my old motor is still freshly machine shop rebuilt with only 3k miles on it. I have all receipts and transaction records. If you want ill sell you the head and just get the bottom end rebuilt. The head is sitting in the trunkof my car as we speak, and its in superb condition. If interested, PM me or give me a call at 4109776948.

Do you want it rebuilt to factory spec or with better internals? The valve seals are part of the head and would be separatly priced than the engine. The accessories (T-belt..etc) are not included in an engine rebuild.. nor is the work to re/re the engine or install the accessories.

Off the top of my head:
Typical Engine Rebuild $1500-1900
Head Rebuild $300-400
T-Belt Parts $150
Labor ~$1,000

There's a couple good DSM shops in PA (JNZ, SBR) that could help you out. I'd suggest giving them a call as I'm sure they could better help you determine what work would be needed / price to charge you.

IMO.. I would not recommend going to the dealor unless you've hit Powerball as the kind of work you're looking for would likely cost more than your car x2

Thanks for the help guys, but I need some more help. I'm poor and thinking about getting the head rebuilt instead of the whole engine. I definately need valve stem seals and motor mounts, I could use new lifters, piston rings, and a timing belt job. If I just get the head rebuilt, does that include new piston rings? (I'm not too smart with internals)
So, how much do you think a head rebuild with lifters, valve seals, motor mounts, and a timing belt job would run me? And does that include rings? Thank you.

mines getting rebuilt on monday, $4000 for a complete rebuild all said and done.

I hope thats not the price of factory rebuilt, otherwise if i were u i wouldve bought a complete rebuilt engine for $3500 from Jasper (not sure if they sell 6 Bolt motors..but i'd guess they do) or better yet a magnus motor. Not being rude or anything man but that $4,000 is ridiculous if its only being rebuilt to factory specs. I spent $2500 shipped for my motor out of a 99GST with 25K original miles on it, and its almost like brand new. I would say its in flawless condition. I pulled the valve cover off the other day and man was it just gorgeous inside, everything was mirror shiny with not even a scratch on it. From the lifters to cams, etc..it was gorgeous. Those were excellent signs that the motor was well taken care of for those 25k miles. You just gotta look around, i even think to myself i spent too much on my motor but hey, i got tired of rebuilding and took a different step to start off fresh. Now only if it was a 6 bolt....

well the $4000 includes complete rebuild bore .20 higher compression pistons, the rebuild itself is 2500, then 1000 for the removal and install, factor in tax and your around $4000

aswell im in canada as it seems DSM stuff is abit more expensive to get done here.

Why do you think you need valve seals? Is the car smoking on startup?

BTW.. rings would be part of an engine rebuild.. valve seals would be a head rebuild.
If you look at JNZs pricing I see they will do head rebuild + replace the seals for < $300.
Thsi would obvuously no include re/re the head or the timing belt parts/labor that would also be needed.

I think I need valve stem seals because the car blows blue smoke at idle and when getting it into gear when I start moving. I don't think it's the rings because it started doing this really bad all of a sudden and I thought rings went bad gradually. What would be symptoms of bad rings? Also can you link me to JNZ's website or something, I don'y know where they're located. Thank You.

your first step is to do a compression test. this will tell the shape of the motor..
