I'm just wondering whats the best way to go about this should I take out the heater / ac blower box out. I just cant really tell where the wiring goes too in the firewall, I already have the replacement harness, and mines all melted and messed up so I have to swap it out. My car is a 92 awd automatic

It all connects above the passenger kick panel. You don't need to take out anything related to the heater or A/C. Make sure you connect all of the grounds or the engine won't run.

Remove the dash panel to get at where the harness goes through the firewall. You have to disconnect the harness from behind the speedo cluster and underneath the dash.

You can see where it goes from underhood, behind the battery, there is a huge rubber grommet with the harness going through.

Leave the Heater/AC box in. If you have removed the ac pump and lines, now is a good time to get at the evaporator core in the black box.

One of those grounds you don't want to forget is under the dash panel (when installed) on the passenger side of the car near the window. It may sneak in there on you. Don't forget it.

Just got done doing the swap in my car. It was alot easier than what everyone said. Take out the pasenger side seat it makes getting in there so much easier. Remember to drop the stearing column before you try to pull the dash. I made the mistake of thinking I could get the dash out with out it down. Good luck, if you need any help or have any questions let me know.

If you're just replacing the engine harness you don't have to do anything with the cluster or the dash. They are two seperate wiring harness's.

oh really what do i have to un plug its only the engine harness that connects to the ecu and tcu inside the car.

That would have been nice to know a couple years ago. It would have saved me some time and a few layers of skin for sure. Another, "I should have known" :toobad: Thanks. :thumb:

I wonder why more n/t to turbo conversions aren't done this way then. Is there something I'm missing? I would rather run a whole turbo harness than wire the reisistor pack, knock sensor, (possibly FPS), and MAS.

Removal of harness:

Unplug harness from motor and ECU

Remove glovebox and go to town

Sweet Ill check out the kick panel over there and see what im working with, because I really don't feel like taking the dash off because thats more time that I would rather not waste.

Sorry to bring this back but I am in the middle of doing this right now and it just seems impossible to get the harness through the firewall without removing the dash. I have the kick panels off and the carpet pulled back and all of the connector unplugged but there is still the matter of the sound deadening material (did you just cut it???) and reaching the hole in the firewall. Can you maybe give a little more detail on how you actually got through the thick and thin?

Im not going to lie. I dont know how he got it threw either without taking out the dash, this whole project sucks and there doesnt seem to be too much about it.

He has a galant... maybe he forgot we are dealing with first gen tel's. Either way my whole engine harness is unplugged and ready to come out but I'm really not wanting to take the dash out again. That's a bi***.

You know what is really ironic... I got into an online argument of sorts with GVR4592 or whatever his name is that said you can replace the harness without removing the dashboard. It was about sizing of silicon couplers and I was pissed because people post information on the board without knowing what they are talking about. I ended up getting banned for a week for that stupid thread for expressing my opinions. Anyway, I'd like to have an explanation of how you (GVR4592) can change the wiring harness without removing the dashboard, it will be very interesting to me. Not trying to instigate here or to prove my point for the *second* time, I just want to know how its done because I'm doing it right now and it seems impossible. I am trying to remove the blower with the dash still in and it's more than difficult.

When I did mine I pulled the dash. It may have been a little more work, but I wanted to have clean access to the a/c and heater boxes. It really wasnt that bad of a project. When I removed the harness from my old car I just ripped out the a/c box and didnt really care if I had to put it back. If you can get the a/c box out of the way the harness slides right out.

I did it yesterday without removing the dash. I removed the glove box, kick panel, the bracket for the glove box and one other little metal bracket and I was able to weasel the blower motor out of the way. Then I made a surgical incision through the sound deadener with a blade along the path of the harness. After that it was simple... I still have to finish buttoning it up but all is well.
