i am doing my first rebuild and i am needing some help with what is all replaced in our 4g63 7 bolt engines? i have looked at some forums but haven't found a real good answer? also i was wondering about my machine work i will need done? where should i take it? thank you
 
well last year i junked my stock turbo and replaced it. when i took the turbo apart it had a lot of shaft play. after i did that i needed to fix the head and i did. but then when i fixed it i only drove it a cupple times then the head gasket blew. so i just decided to take the engine out n rebuild it.
 
amazon makes a decent rebuild kit for our 4g63's. Comes with all new seals and rings for the pistons (I think.) or extreme psi does as well. When you have it all apart, check out the blueprinting videos on youtube by a member named Jafromobile, he outlines how to inspect the block, head and the pistons as well. Great information if your doing a rebuild.
 
yea i watch the videos all the time. and i have looked at the kit on there. are they good quality? and also i was wondering were should i take the block for machine work? can u just hone the block and just put the pistons in after you re-ring them or bore the block?
 
I am in no way trying to bust on you but when i see posts like this I cringe. Building an engine is not hard but you really need some general knowledge of what to do, whats right and whats wrong. There are some specialized tools you are going to need unless you have the machine shop assemble your engine for you. I would recommend you get someone that has done this before to help you. It's very easy to get some bad information or miss some little thing that is going to cost you big in the end. I just hate to see someone spend a bunch of money and then have something go wrong just because they didn't know any better. I'm not trying to talk you out of doing it yourself but I don't want to see your hard earned money go up in smoke.
 
Just make sure you take alot of measurements. If you have to ask if there's a spec for something then there more than likely is. If you assemble it yourself get a Haynes manual and memorize the minimum and maximum specs for everything.

Ask lots of questions. Worst thing that could happen is some ego happy key puncher will get all 'holier than thou' on you. So what. This site is here for questions. (After doing a thorough search that is).

Good luck man. I just finished my first build. This site helped me immensely and I just drove it for the first time last week. I gotta say there is no feeling of accomplishment like that one. It was a pain in the Ass but it was definitely worth every busted knuckle and weekend spent putting it together. :D

thank you i have been looking for some tools so i can measure right. like a micrometer and all those measuring tools. where is a good place to get these tools? i also got a Chilton manual is the Haynes better?
 
I couldn't stress this enough! Please check all specs on your parts. Block, Crank, PTWC, (Piston to wall clearance) Oil clearance on rods and mains, Decks on block and head. During my first engine build this was the part that I skimped out on and when you have to troubleshoot something after assembly its so much harder. Take your time! I unfortunately had a time limit on my build. Now things are different. I have time and a lot more knowledge. Do your research. A common mistake first timers make is they get so anxious to get everything assembled and see the motor start. So they start to put it together without having all the parts needed. Make sure you have everything you need before you start assembly. Just a little bit of what I went through and just trying to help your first build end better than mine did! :thumb: Last thing I'd recommend is....if you can purchase new parts!
