Well... I'm not very good on the electrical side of things. With that being said I ran into a problem today. I started the car last week and everything was good. I go to wire up the fans and before I start I was going to check and see which wire was hot and which was ground as they are universal fans and have to be wired in. I hook the battery up and (POP) the main fuse under the hood goes. I did cut the two wires for the boost solenoid off and the wires for the water level sensor, thats it. I did notice the post on the alternator were the 2 10gauge wires connect had a melted spot on it. Is it possible for the alternator to ground itself and cause this issue?
I did briefly search on google and nothing came up. Thanks for any help.

Try covering the bare spots in electrical tape and hooking it up again, if it works, then you should replace those wires, if not, then your problem is elsewhere. Coatings on wires do dry out/crack/melt from time to time, and the alternator wires are in one of the warmer spots, so the coating melting and then it grounding out on the alternator frame is a possibility.

For a permanent fix, make sure you use solder on the joints and heat shrink tubing, covered with plastic convoluted tubing. Electrical tape doesn't hold up well to the elements under the hood.

The alternator has been relocated and the car had started up probably 8 or 9 times since then. The wires were extended to reach the new location. But they were soldered, heat shrink was put on and the the on the full length of the extension was wrapped in electrical tape.
