bought a 91 laser rs turbo about a month ago. ran rich, rough idle, all sorts of things. took it to a mechanic, he tested a lot of things out. the exhaust was restricted, suggested a new catalytic converter, I just replaced that today with a straight pipe. he couldn't get into the ECM at all. I've heard the 91 ECM's go bad, and that leads me to my question.

after replacing the cat, I went to start it up and it won't start. it tries but it wont turn over. with the key left on, there's a crazy electrical noise, sounds like wires grounding out. take the key out, sound goes away. now, Im PRETTY sure that the problem is ECM related, but Im wondering what years ECM are compatable...and also, if this sounds like anything else, Im ALL ears!

I've had the car about a month, and I've been able to drive it for maybe 3 hrs. Im already contemplating selling it...

From my experience the 91-94 ecm's will work in your car w/o switching wires. If you decide to go buy a 90 ecm you need to change wires 6 and 14 around when connecting it.

now thats what I've been able to find out for myself as well. however, Im still questioning a few things. like whether I need one from a turbo or not, or if it matters if its an auto or 5 spd.

Im not trying to build my car up to race, Im not even looking to modify it, I just want my car to run the way its supposed to run...

ok so now all I need to find out is if it needs to be from an auto, like my car. would the difference in fuel injectors make a difference in the ECU? just to play it safe Im looking for a 91-94 turbo ECU from an auto, but I'd also like to know, just to know, you know? :p

im not sure about that although im sure it wouldnt matter....the ecu would compensate for the injectors so that wouldnt matter either. i could see an auto have a few more plugs or something on the tranny but i dont think it would matter on the ecu side....i doubt they made 2 different harnesses for the cars, that wouldnt be cost effective

(Federal means non California)

Im not so sure I understand the chart. are all the part numbers in a certain column compatable?

for example, my cars ECM part # is MD165529

here is what was listed on that site:

Federal AT
6/90-6/92 - MD165529
7/92-5/93 - MD193398
6/93-5/94 - MD304483
?/91-?/?? - MD193298

so would any of those work?

any chance an awd turbo auto ECM would work?
