Hi all,

i have a 95 GSX with a 99 ecu. I want to start learning how to tune, but i am confused if i still need to install a flash cable and if any other modifications are required before we can tune. I bought a 96 ecu and the car feels better with that ecu. I am confused why. One ecu gives me the P0443 and the 99 gives me the P0446.

I was going to get DSM Link lite V3, but since i have the 99 ecu, i might as well flash it before investing more cash.

Is there a step by step guide out there for the convesrion?

Thanks for those who can help.

Every now and then ECU needs a rebuild, they have "leaky" caps. If you're going with LINK then you'll need the Eprom conversion and OBD2 cable adapter too I believe for the 99 ecu, can't remember I helped a friend awhile back. ECMlink will and can help you with getting started with tuning.

no step for step guide but the only thing you will HAVE TO change will be the infamous spark plug swap since you are a 95-96 with the inverted CAS. You can either do it at the spark plug wires going from stock location on the coil pack to swap your spark plug order to 3-2-1-4. Or you can swap it at the ECU pins. First you swap injectors Pin 1 is now 14, Pin 2 is now Pin 1, Pin 15, is now Pin 2, and Pin 14 is now Pin 15. Now you must do the coil packs, Swap pin 10 and 23. When you swap the coil pack pins you will NOT need to swap the plug wires up top because you did it at the ecu.

The only thing is when you swap the 98/99 ecu into a 95-97 you will get an evap solenoid error. This can be turned off in the periphery bits in Ceddy mods. However with the periphery bits off you cannot pass inspection.

You will need ECUflash to flash Ceddymods on the ECU.
You will need an OPENPORT 2.0 to talk to the ECU.
You should use EVOSCAN for $25 to log with.

thanks i jusr swapped the charcoal canester. lets see if that help. about the link, ill see how it works out flashing the 99 ecu, then ill decided if i go with the link.

thanks.

thanks guys, :thumb:

i going to swap ecus again and changer the firing through the cables and see how it reacts.

i dont see the CAS on the left side. where should it be?

i already have ecu flash and evoscan, except that i have the 1.3 cable because of my 3G. will this cable work? i can data log the 99 ecu with this cable.

after changing the ecu to the 99 and the firing sequence, the car didnt want to start. could it be something with the CAS?

The CAS on the 95-96 cars are under the intake cam gear so you can’t see if it everything is installed, pull the upper timing cov3er and you can at least see the trigger ring on the back side of the cam gear.

The 1.3 cable will at least let you log the ECU with EVOscan, I don’t know if it will work with MUTIII logging or if you will be stuck using it as OBDII.

I have an EVO8 ECU in my 96 Talon so the process wasn’t much different than swapping to the H8 ECU. What exactly was the engine not doing when it wouldn’t start?

I have already ordered the 2.0 open port tactrix adapter with the flash cable. since the car already starts fine with the 99 ECU, i am assuming the swaps on the injectors are already there. Regardless, i will double check and im going to start flashing it.

thanks.

thanks kthackst,

i changed the charcoal canister and some vaccum lines, with the 96 ecu i get no codes. with the 99 i effectively get the one you said P0446 Evap Solenoid malfunction. I wonder if theirs a fix.....

anyway, i will check the pins as well. im just waiting on the open port adapter, it should get here tomorrow. i already had ecu flash and evoscan.

thanks for your help.

Ok,

Can someone help me with what i should do next.
i was able to read my ROM but can see anything but this.

Make: Mitsubishi
Model: Eclipse
Submodel: GSX AWD
Market: USDM
Transmission: Manual
Year: 1999
ECU ID:
Case ID: MD359403
Internal ID: EM2363
Flash Method: mitsukernel
Memory Model: H8539FA
Checksum Module:

but no maps. i have donated for the updated version of ceddy mods. my mods are listed on my profile:

Bolt-on Modifications:
CX Racing FMIC
16g Turbo
1g BOV
255 Walpro Fuel Pump
550 Injectors
Ported O2 housing
Ported Exhaust Manifold
3" Custom Straight Throuh Exhaust.
AEM TruBoost Controller
AEM wideband
SAFCII

should i flash this hex file to my 99 ecu?

thanks:hmm:

...with the 99 i effectively get the one you said P0446 Evap Solenoid malfunction. I wonder if theirs a fix.....

The P0446 CEL on the 99 ECU is because (after completeing most of the OBDII drive-cycles) on a warm start the ECU is checking the pressure difference between the fuel tank and the atmoshere. This is the same code you will get if you forget your gas cap at fill up time.

I don't know if there is a work-around other than installing the Fuel Tank Differential Pressure Switch and the Evap Emission Ventilation Solenoid. Those two pieces work together to test the fuel tank vapor lines and gas cap for leaks.

This only began in 98 so if you install a 98-99 ECU in a pre-98 chassis you will have to add the wiring to the ECU as well as the above parts. Pin 55 is used to sink switched 12 volt power from the solenoid and pin 61 reads the 0-5 volt signal from the FTDPS.

I started down this path trying to convert a 97 TSI AWD ECU to a 99 GSX ECU to hopefully eliminate the nightmare of getting the OBD-II drive-cycles to set "ready" for annual emissions testing in AZ.

After realizing the 99 ECU would require more work (as mentioned above) I decided to try the OBD-II recommended drive cycle once again and this time I figured it out so I'm sticking with the 97 ECU for now.

thanks dave,

then ill just stick to eliminating it through the periphery bytes and just avoiding the cell. Will this code cause more gas consumption? i may also remove the extra voltage to the walpro 255 pump and see if that eliminates any pressure.

No and I don't get your comment about eliminating pressure.

I mean since its a 255 it creates more gas pressure. when i remove my gas cap at the pump, i release fuel pressure or fule vapor pressure. I am assuming the rewire mod and the fuel pump could be the cause of this. I may be wrong just trying to make logic out of it. I dont have an aftermarket FPR.

Hey guys thanks for the advice thrown out there to me. i am strugling now with my SD from Ceddy Mods.

i am posting in the newbie section cause i am and dont have enough priviliges to post in the proper section. Sorry!!!!

i have flashed my 99 ecu and kinda dialed in my RC 550 injectors. i have installed the Omni 4 bar MAP and calibrated it as Ceddy states to do so.

but when i start the car, it runs real lean 16.1 and above on my Wideband. and when i cruise it, ite real rich at the 3200 rpms and starts farting black smoke.

can anyopne help me getting my car running well. this is the SD MAPs as i have them:
