90 or 91....awd tsi.....If you had to pick one of the two years which one would it be and why. I would also like to know what the difference is betweenthe two years, if there is any.

As far as I know there is no difference between the 90 & 91. If I had to pick one I would pick the one that was in the best shape. Little spent on repair is more spent on upgrades.

I'd pick the 90 just because I use to have on and I miss it like hell.

Some of the wiring is different between the years.

Oh, and I'm sure there is a "What are the Differences" thread floating around somewhere on this site, if there is I'm sure it would be very helpful for you.

Go with a 91 after factoring in the condition of them. The 90's have issues with the wiring harness.

91! everything about the 90 sucks. The only thing im keeping 90 on my car is the oil filter housing for the external cooler. Every other part has been switched to 91+

could you be more specific, like what is really the big things that suck. I have a 91 that I was going to sell, I like my 90 better but i really cant see any differences, other than the ecu wires. Keep in mind they are booth in almost perfect shape, and each one runs like a top, i just want the one that will be the best in the long run.

The 90 transmission really sucks, weakest one you can have in a dsm if its a 5spd. The harness being different is a pain. You have to buy all 90 specific parts unless you add plugs, modify things, ect. The cas is different, throttle body, fuel rail, ecu, harness, shifter, its just a different car basically. Im just not into it and hating dealing with all the different (and not as good) parts.

90s have different throttle bodies, fuel rails, cruise control, tranny splines, ecus, tps and isc, and more things I can't remember off the top of my head.

91s are better but they still have some wiring/ecu differences from 92-94 models if I remember correctly.

damn, saw this just after I posted mine LOL

that is bad news to me, UGH can any one please give me some good news about the 1990 haha, I really like it. I know they cant be that bad>

It must be a hit or miss with the 90s sucking that bad, I have had my 90 for a while and the only issues i have with the car are minor. Never had any wiring issues and my tranny is just as any of my other dsms have been with bad syncros.

yah my 90 kicks ass thats why i was going to sell the 91, but im all confused on what to do now.

90s have smaller brakes I think too.. not that it matters much.. anyone who wants good brakes should upgrade to Brembos or some sort in that line..

..and damn I just drew a blank..

My first DSM was a black '91... It was awesome. Cause its DSM!

1991 would be my choice, the 1990 has numerous limitations.

'91s have the same size brakes. It was in '92 they came with two piston calipers.

'90 models really aren't that bad; I have three. Unless you plan on keeping everything stock, most things that break that are '90 specific you will replace with something aftermarket anyway.

I agree its really not that bad. I havn't run into many limitations with replacing parts.

OP, does your 90 or 91 have an eprom ecu?

91 is better IMO

difference from 90-91

-Shifter base on 91 shorter/shift cables different
-CAS is plug type on 91
-91 tranny stronger
-different speedometer
-fuel rail/throttlebody different
-coil pack & power transistor different
-power steering pump different color LOL

Over all the 91-94 Dsm is better

yes they each have eprom ecus

I suppose you are lucky then.

The previous posters are correct with their information. The decision is up to you on which to keep. You said both cars are in near perfect condition, If your favorite one is the 90, I would keep it. All DSM's need to have parts replaced at some point. Both cars could take a crap on you tomorrow, you never know.
Keep the one you like more.

I'd personally keep both though.:D

90's are sort of the bastard year for 1g's.

HOWEVER, if you read enough into the wiring, you can still use alot of the 91+ stuff, by simply modifying the wiring to 91 spec.
