Dual stage "Oomph" dash button

Okay, I don't have the rep points to post this in the turbo forum, so I'll do it here.

I wouldn't be suprised if someone has done this already, but I didn't find anything like it in a forum search.

My 2G talon has a blank in one of the dash buttons (my guess is that it was for the sun/moonroof option that I didn't get when I bought the car in October, 1996).

I can't resist the temptation to add a button in this location and wire a dual stage boost controller (like the TurboXS Dual Stage MBC) switch to it.

So what I need is a spare dash switch (they are the same shape, so maybe any of those rounded-parallelogram-buttons will work - like a defroster button from a junkyard find). I'm no electrical engineer, but I would hope that this could be adapted.

Next step: clean off the stock text from the switch and replace it with the word, "Oomph!" I'm not sure how to get a clean graphic on the button in matching (or maybe contrasting red) paint, but having the same font, etc. would be killer. Of course, other creative folk can come up with a different graphic for the button.

So the idea is to select your high boost controller setting with "Oomph!" depressed, and your normal, rush-hour traffic, lower boost controller setting with "Oomph!" non-depressed. When you want/need more oomph, press the "Oomph!" button, dummy!

I am a true "sleeper" fan, so having a button that blends perfectly into the stock background is extremely appealing to me.

I also have some ideas for a spare panel for extra gauges, but I have to search the forum and do a bit more proof-of-concept-investigation to make sure that the ideas are new and will work before I post them.

If anyone goes off and does this (before I do), post a picture of the result (and give me some rep points so that I can post on the other forums like a man ). If someone else has posted this already, forgive my forum-search-retardation, inform me of my blunder, and give the link to the thread. Then I can atleast see how someone else did it and may learn something handy about the idea.

This is a picture of what i ended up doing with the MIA mystery third button. The hazard switch wont fit directly in if i remember right. ( I did this about a year ago). Anyways i took a file to a side so it would fit in the bezel spot. I used the button for the riced out underglow, so it was just a matter of wiring the underglow, and then running the wiring that to the hazard switch rather than the cheap switch that street glow gives you. I wish i could post some pics, but i sold the car about 2 weeks ago... Hope this gives a little insight, I'll try to answer so more questions if you guys have any

I thought it was for the convertable Spider.

The rear wiper button on our cars is where the convertable top button goes since they have no need for a wiper.

i've talked to a dodge/chryler dealership and they have no records of heated leather seat buttons in that dash spot. (not when mitsu was producing them anyway). so, another possiblility bites the dust. the mystery lives.

just an update for anyone who is intereted. i just bought a hazard button and will be installing it pretty soon in the 3rd button locaction (upside down). it will be used to control the dual stage boost controller. i'm really excited about this because that is the perfect location and perfect kind of switch for FAST switching between shifts. i'll post pics when i get it installed. (probably a week or two).

i will definately take pics and do a write up. and i think we concluded it was not for the convertable top, as they have that button where our rear wiper button is. (since they don't have a rear wiper). so far, every possiblility that has been suggested for the purpose of that button spot has been denied....on dsms, sebrings, and avengers!

i don't even know where to look anymore. i have spent waaaaay too much time on the phone with mitsu, dodge and chrysler dealerships. i have looked at literally hundreds of pictures of dsm's, sebrings and avengers and i haven't seen or heard anything about an actual 3rd button. if they do exist, they're rarer than a 3 tittied super model. WTF

I have always wondered what went in that spot. I have thought of what it could possibly be and I just assumed it was for the convertable top. Well that is obviously not right so maybe I can figure this out by searching around as well. Now I have no idea what would go in there. Maybe it was just an extra spot that the factory could add something to later on if they needed to and it would have just been blank if they did not put a switch hole in that spot. i dont know

back from the dead....again.

i have been playing around with this idea recently and can't figure out the wiring. there are 2 grounds, 1 for the switch light (which i figured out how to work) and another that i assume is for the switch itself. anyway, to make it lights up just tap the 2 right most wires on the bottom into the original switch. now, when you turn on your lights, both switches will light up. (convenient for night operation). i can't figure out how to wire the switch itself though. too many wires and no simple answer. i think i might just buy a push button switch from ace hardware and attach it to the back of the hazard switch with some jb weld or something. this will work very well and is extremely simple. i'll try to post pics if i can make it work.

Back from the dead indeed. Are you gonna make any attempt at putting a cool little graphic/icon on the button that somehow symbolizes more boost? Like maybe the stock boost gauge icon of the turbo?

I wonder if this mystery switch socket might be from a Japanese version (JDM) or something.

Can't you get the light wired up and still use the push button switch behind?

Also, you might want to ask about the wiring dilema in a new thread. Someone with an electrical engineering degree may bite and help you out. Just a thought.

i don't think it will work the way i'm planning on doing it since i'll be cutting the back off of the switch, including the wiring pins. also, the switch i bought from a guy on here doesn't light up, it's broken and he didn't tell me that before hand. i think i will post about the wiring issue and if i get a response maybe i'll just buy another switch. (although it was pretty hard to find that one).

so, does anyone know what is behind that bezel if you take it off? is there anything or can you just add a switch?

There is nothing behind the bezel, at least there was'nt on mine.
I snapped out the bezel, punched out the little plastic part, and had the
metal fab. shop here machine me a little aluminum plate w\ a hole drilled in it.
I put a little billet switch with a L.E.D on the end of it in the plate, and hard wired
my radar to it. Then I hid all the wires, and now all you see is a little wire comeing
out of my heater vent (approx. 2in) and the radar stuck to the windshield. It makes
it easy to turn on and off, and I can use my power outlet for my laptop now.

There is no mystery. It's a blank that was never used in any Chrysler product, ever.
The sunroof switch mounts above the rearview mirror, and the convertible top replaces the rear window wiper switch, as stated.

You can use an emergency flasher switch in the bottom hole, but there has to be some filing done. The hole inside isn't rectangular.
The defroster switch is only momentary contact, and would need a relay or transistor scheme to use as an on-off switch.

yeah, i pretty much figured out there was no switch for that spot after looking into EVERY theory. i have an extra hazard switch, which i have already filed down to make fit in there. i just have to finish wiring it up.

squyers answered a question that i figured out a long time ago, (the thought is appreciated), and i just haven't had the time to try and figure out the wiring.
