It's a newer stance, evolved out of the competition world. Ideally, it keeps your front ballistic plate faced towards the threat. It takes some practice, but it is VERY stable.

Obviously, I'm not wearing my plate carrier in this pic, but it doesn't hurt to train how you fight.

ETA: It's designed primarily for CQB circumstances.
