DSMLink vs E manage

Brads your not understanding the E-manage is just a means to an ends.

The end being a car that isn't as easy to tune as dsmlink? I think I am understanding that quite well.

1. I'm not sure if you noticed but not many DSM owners tune based on those items. Most logs you see posted from the 2G's are of RPM, Timing, TPS, Injector Duty, and 02. I've never seen someone post Coolant temps, or Air intake temps. All of which the E-manage can log.

Coolant and air intake temps are both good info to look at when you are trying to optimize your cars performance. Do you need to look at it every log? No, but it certainly is worthwhile to look at sometimes.
So people with 2Gs never look at fuel trims at all? I guess I missed that day of class, I keep screwing up, and looking at my fuel trims. And the other thing you forgot to mention that people log with 2Gs are knock. At least the people smart enough to realize the value of dsmlink do :thumb:

2. Most people who have AFC's don't complain about huge timing issues they just try and tune around them. Spending a little extra time tuning the timing isn't a big deal to save $400.00 plus at least the E-manage has these options the AFC sure doesn't. If you tune a little conservative you won't have drastic changes in knock from day to day. I'm sure if you tune a DSM link to the edge you might have to tweak it every now and again.

The difference between them is big. With a piggyback, in order to get the compensation for the big injectors, you have to cut air flow down a lot. This results in getting back into the middle of the timing maps where timing can change pretty easily, especially if those intake temps or baro pressure you haven't been bothering to log change, and affect the calculated mass airflow (you know, the one that the Emanage can't log). With DSMLink, the ECU still sees the right airflow, and once you are flowing a certain amount of air, you get to the max airflow part of the timing table, and sit there. If intake temps change a little, timing will stay much more consistent than with the piggyback where it isn't getting into the peak parts of the table. This same situation applies to fuel tuning, since as the airflow changes, the ECUs target AFR does as well. DSMLink keeps this target more stable too.

3. Its not about just saving $400.00 it’s about having an alternative. Using your logic why didn't you just save your $800.00 in buying a DSMLINK buy an AEM. It’s only another $400.00?

Weird, my logic is about buying the right tool for the job. DSMLink is a right tool. I didn't want to come up with fuel and timing maps and deal with driveability issues, the factory has a nice set of maps already in the stock ECU. I just wanted to get rid of the stock limits of the ECU without the downsides of a piggyback.

The AEM can be made to work just fine as well, but if you think you just plug it in, turn the key and your car is as smooth as stock and making tons of power, you are in for a rude awakening.

And where can you get an AEM for $865? My DSMLink was $465, since I bought it the first day it was available, and did all the socketing myself. So if the AEM was only another 400, you should spill the beans on where you get that pricing :thumb:

Also it seems like you are attacking the e-manage product like you built DSMLink yourself.

No, I design ECUs(and piggybacks) for a living for the past 7 or 8 years, but not the DSMLink one. I have respect for an intelligently put together product, and was in the process of working out the stock maps when DSMLink came out. As interesting as disassembling the stock setup can be, I'd rather pay a few hundred for someone elses work, its much easier. The way you defend the Emanage, you'd think you sell them?

The E-manage like a AEM, Haltek, TEC-III and DSMLink are just alternative products to tune a vehicle. Its not a huge deal. Its basically this from cheapest to most expensive. Reprogram ECU if you have a 95 or a ECU, S-AFC, E-Manage, DSMLink, AEM, Haltek, etc...

Well if you want to just slap something in there without really understanding the differences in how it affects your tuning, then go ahead and get the SAFC, Emanage, or whatever is on sale at dormroompartsRus.com this week. You are right, it isn't a huge deal, but I like to spend my money intelligently. I know thats a rare thing on the internet, but thats just who I am.

I really hate to hawk my own stuff, but the ECU+ also falls into the "alternative tuning device" category. http://www.ecuplus.com. Also logs coolant temperature :)

Tom

It seems like a better product than any of the other piggybacks out there. The logging of all the other sensors, and spare inputs for logging other stuff, as well as the Palm software, gives it lots of pluses over its competition.
