DSM Valvetrain. Need help. Full explanation.

1992 eclipse gsx..
Was driving to work doing about 70mph on the interstate not under a huge load maybe 2500rpm. All of a sudden glug glug blah no power engine dies. I pull over and it will not restart. Long story short after getting the car towed home I find the cam gears do not turn and the accessory belts do. Pop off the valve cover and I find all the exhaust side rockers lying down in the head. Towe it to school and pull off the timing belt and find teeth stripped from the belt. I ask why? I bought the car recently and 2500 miles ago it got a new timing belt and head!! my conclusion.. shortly after buying the car I noticed a small oil leak coming somewhere from the front of the engine. At school I found the oil leak coming from the exhaust cam seal. I am assuming oil got on the belt, the belt slipped, teeth were stripped off, and the exhaust valves all crashed into the pistons and bent them all to hell.

My questions for you guys.

1. Do you think its quite possible I may have spun a bearing when those valves crashed into the pistons or will later on? Smart to put new bearings in now or not worry about it?

2. I have money but I dont want to spend a ton of money and I am not looking to put aftermarket cams or anything like that in , but I want it to be done right. what do you guys suggest brand wise parts to rebuild the valvetrain with? I was looking on slowboy and ferrara seems like a good choice ya?

3. any input on this about anything I might be missing would be a huge help with some of you that I know have run into this as we all know DSM valvetrain problems are notorious.

water pump(since everything is open)

springs maybe?
rockers maybe?
Pistons took a hit but are not cracked and look usable so probably not.

These are what the crash marks on the pistons looks like, it looks about the same across them all.

I would make sure that your timing belt tensioner was correct. Since your belt was just replaced it could also be the problem. I would replace it.

You really don't need to replace the springs. The rockers may be ok but if they show any signs of damage get new ones. I would also recommend you replace your lifters as they may be damaged as well. Ferrea (sorry I don't know the spelling) makes very good components and is what we always used at the shop. Also make sure the shop replaces your valve guides. I have seen heads that valves smaked pistons that the guides felt fine. However the head dropped a guide a week later. They may seem ok but they take a huge beating when your valves bend like that.

If you are planning a better build later on I would recommend that you put alittle into the head. Now would be the time to maybe do a polish job to the ports. Also now might be the time to replace the springs and retainers with lighter ones. You can stick with your stock camshafts because they are alot easier to replace later on.
 
1) I doubt the valves would do any damage to you rod bearings, but depending on the miles on your car, you might want to go with a full rebuild anyways.

2)It all depends on your goals and plans for the future. Your stock valvetrain should still be ok(besides the bent valves of course).

3)You shouldnt need a new head or all new valves, but again, it depends on your plans for the future and how much money you have. The valves that are not bent can just be resurfaced. The head should just be compeletely checked over. You might need new guides if they are worn out of spec or cracked.

Thanks for the info your great, whats the purpose in replacing the springs and retainers with lighter ones? Good call on the tensioner deffinately going to replace that as well. Visually looking at the lifters they look okay. Tomorrow I will be taking apart the head and checking out the valve guides. From the looks of how bad the valves were bent I am almost counting on some damaged guides.

1. When the valves smack the pistons hard they jam down on the piston and rod and putting a bunch of force on the bearing. anybody else agree with me here?

2. I like the car the way it is. Stock engine except 2g pistons, 550cc injectors, big 16g, upgraded ecm, 255lb/hour fuel pump, SAFC II Tuned, manual boost controller, some other minor things.

3. I will if the guides have excessive damage.. All new exhaust valves for sure, if the intakes are usable I will reuse them.
