I am being offered a 1992 black eagle talon with only 11,000 miles on it. It seems like great condition and it is a tsi awd with leather interior.

The dealer closed and stored the car for a number of years. At 5000 miles the whole thing was taken apart and repainted. Or so he says.

He's asking for 10k for the car. Also has an act 2600 clutch.

Any advice would be great, thanks.

Is it a stock car? If yes then why the act at only 11,000 miles? Sounds a bit fishy and 10,000 WTF What was his reasoning for that price, just the low mileage? Sure it's super clean but a car that old with so little miles doesn't mean a lot when seals start going. Just my thoughts, you have any more info on it?

If it was properly maintained and stored then I'd offer 8k max plus ditch the ugly rims for the stockers haha
I remember the last all original mint condition tsi awd that sold went for 8k with something like 14k miles all original down to the factory tires. sold some time last year this time I believe.

I think I might have seen that ad for the last low mile tsi awd. I am also a fan of the factory rims to match the car.

He didn't say why he did the act but he said he was a mechanic and he installed it. He said he had 10k invested in replacing molding parts and repainting parts and door and molding seals due to age and some dings from storage. Supposedly wasn't registered until 2005 (yet to be confirmed with carfax)

Which means in reality it was likely 3-4 k of repairs at best and is only work maybe 1k more resale (my estimate)

I also would worry about seals at that age.

Assuming there isn't anything fishy 10k is still a little high?

It DOES look like it may be legit, from the few pics you posted. As wny-j24 said, the seals and all belts, possibly all rubber bushings are gonna be toast. Every single hose in the car needs replaced as well.
Cars are fickle like that. You do need to drive them and get them to operating temp just to maintain them and the integrity of the hoses and belts. Gas tank would be another place i would expect more sludge than you can imagine. Unless he completely drained every ounce of gas from the lines i would expect sludge.

Too much money but if you want it as a collector then jump on it. Make sure you freshen everything up and keep her 100% stock and in a nice garage.

I would plan on driving it back 12 hours to my home so not sure how much I could get done at a local mechanic to clear some of that from the tank and fuel lines. He drove it for a year or so and put on 6k. so anything in there (sludge) has already done what it is going to do. He said the guy who had it before him likely didn't know stick because it would slip under acceleration.

I would likely make it a secondary car. Fair weather driving but not 100% collector.

Replacing fuel lines belts and hoses might be required to change I would agree.[DOUBLEPOST=1407816623][/DOUBLEPOST]also said he replaced the axil seals when doing clutch as well as replacing the valve cover gasket that was leaking a little. Story unfolds. He is a mechanic and has had 16 of these cars over time.

No way. $10k would be for a time capsule/collector, which this is NOT. Pretty damn clean. Not 10k clean. 10k probably buys you a completely restored (painted/tucked) and fully built 10 second 1g. I would offer 6k if I was feeling VERY generous, maybe. I got my Laser RS AWD 6/4 combo with 23k miles and ALL documentation for everything replaced at the dealership (recalls and routine maint etc...) for $4k.

On the clutch issue, It could have seized from sitting too long. Mine did that to the original owner. Had a receipt in my pile for new clutch and flywheel resurface at around 15k miles. Grandpa wasn't drag racing...

You will need to replace anything rubber, and most fluids especially the oils (trans and xfer case/diff). Gas is probably ok, just drain and top off. My gas system was immaculate. Belts and tires were terribly cracked.

While you are draining gas... replace the gas filler neck hose. NAPA has it. It will probably crack and leak on you eventually.

But still, a much better car can be had for 10k.

he wanted everything perfect so he replaced parts along the way. something about door molding made of chrome covered in rubber which cracks and drys on these cars. he said he painted parts due to dings in storage.

I appreciate all the input by the way. He doesn't seem like he is willing to deal lower then 10 so we will see. I can get at least 400 for the rims so its more like 9600 .

That is called the lower window belt trim or something like that. Did he replace it or repaint it? That should say a little bit about the quality of his repairs. And why are the headlights so god-damn yellow if he wanted it to be perfect?

I would say it really depends on what your plans are for the car. If you are looking for a pristine example of a stock 1g, then maybe... Honestly id still try to talk him down a few grand. If you are looking for a 1g to mod and go fast in (like most of us), I cant see the point. There are plenty of other freshly painted good condition 1g's for a LOT less. I cant say I haven't wondered what a bone stock mint condition 1g was like though.

Mint 1g for 10k and has VW passat floor mats in it. That makes perfect sense! Yes its clean and fairly stock but I'd say 6k max, if it had all documentation.

Read all the comments. It "looks" amazing, but you can get a another 1g that will look the same for a lot less, 10 grand can buy a .50 cal m2, or 10 1gs, or 10,000 double cheese burgers. Lol. If you want it go for it. But that money can get you something a lot better.

My thoughts exactly! That drivers seat has a lot of crease marks for only 10k... Unless someone just sat in it while it was in storage. My opinion... While it is clean it's not worth 10k.

Ordered from Japan??? ALL 1G DSM's were manufactured in Normal Illinois, there will not be parts stored in Japan as they were an IMPORT for Japan, all LHD too. Insurance payout on a 92 totaled would be about 4-5 grand, so paying 10k would put you at a huge loss on the trip home

Sorry, but a 22 yr old vehicle especially customized, doesn't make it a collector's vehicle to jack the price up that bad.

Only time a DSM can maybe get some value if it's in MINT condition and 100% stock with no mods to speak of. He drops an ACT-2600 killed the value right there.

Just in those three picts, I smell a scam coming on: The black paint job looks great and all ("GAG" on the wheels), but the other two looks too fishy: My 07 Kia Rondo has 44K miles on it and its muffler doesn't an inch bad as the one that DSM has installed - even my '90 Laser's muffler with 198K on the clock isn't that all bad.

The leather interior looks too worn for 11K miles. Leather shouldn't have all of those cracks unless it has been sit into quite often.

Wouldn't surprise me that he pulled the instrument panel cluster, got into the speedo transmission and easily reset it to give it low miles.

And interesting of no engine picts were shown.
