A while back my thermostat went bad and the coolant in my overflow was boiling, the only smoke was some of the coolant getting on a hot pipe.
So i change the thermostat out and everything was fine when i noticed the temp gauge was at the 3/4 mark..i was just driving normally. I checked the thermo again, added coolant, fans come on, got a new cap, new headgasket, and new after market radiator.....i think it maybe the waterpump but idk how to check that also what is the running temp range my car should be?

I know there's other forums like this but none of them seem to solve my problem:banghead:

Im pretty stumped and any help is really appreciated!

Where did you get the thermostat from?

a normal operating temp for a 2g with a FMIC is anywhere between 195 to 210 (mine sits at 203), start getting to 230-235 and your overheating... thermostats from autozone are usually 190* but you can ask for a colder one, i believe you can even use a 4g64 NA spyder t-stat and they are a 170* stat. (don't quote me on that though)
miniturbo is right about running a distilled water/water wetter mixture but he's also in AZ not CO... its called ANTIFREEZE for a reason, your gonna want atleast 50% green stuff mixed in your coolant system.
since you've got link what do your coolant temps look like? if i were you id do a 50/50 distilled water/antifreeze mix and run a bottle of waterwetter in there. then go to the misc tab in dsmlink and enable your radiator fans to ON all the time.

I got the thermo from autozone i know i know and im using peak coolant which is 50/50 premixed and the radiator is a fuildyine and i tried burping im not to sure about my method

I haven't got an actual temp reading..im getting a tune friday so i.ll try to find out then

I have a brand new OEM 7 bolt thermostat. It sounds like you have a crap one, like most can be from parts stores from my experience. Paypal me 6 bucks to ship it and you can have it. I will never own a 7 bolt so ill never use it. It came with my car when i bought it and its been sitting on my shelf since i got it. Brand new in the box. :thumb:

you have dsmlink then you can get an actual temp reading... if its because you don't know how to capture/display the value while your logging then pull up a chair and read up!
ecmlink101datalogging [ECMTuning - wiki]

let the car warm up and start a log then go drive around for 5 minutes under 40mph then park it and let it idle for 5 minutes. this way you can get a good idea of where the cars idle coolant temp is, check your coolant temp while its logging it should be around 190* to 210*.

2gmummy you should take a picture of your engine bay or update your mods list if youve got a fluidyne radiator... bigger fans? you remove a fan? something doesn't seem right if your overheating with both fans and a fluidyne? according to your mods list you've got no FMIC either but i see it in your gallery. :hmm:

:dsm:

i checked the thermo and it opened when i put it in boiling water..so i dont know

And i have two fans push pull type and the both turn on..but i made my modlist at like 3 am so yea haha but i'll try to get more pics soon

Does it over heat all the time? or just sometimes? It could be one of those goofy half junk ones. Also, did you try running with no t stat at all? If it overheats then, you have other problems.

check your rad cap. It sounds to simple to cause a problem. But my gst did the same thing it wouldnt build up enough pressure. When the pressure drops the water boils. Hope this helps. Let me know pls.

Wonder if he cracked a HG, (or warped the head) near the bore and the water jacket when his T-stat went bad?

When I had a blowout like that, it was my cap that went. Luckily I was close to a gas station to get water back into the system and crept the thing home. I took out the radiator, flushed all the junk out of it along with a block flush which had a good quantity of rust. After the total flush, new T-stat and cap was in order and I've been good since.

How I burp is to drill a .050 hole in the T-stat flange (if there is no wiggle valve on the flange) so the thing can always pass the air out of the system.

"Autocrapzone" - good for buying on-the-shelf items with their sales that they run along with their positive customer counter service, but stay away from their parts counter .. "Wal-Mart" of the autoparts store-so substandard where one wonders if they get parts that failed to pass QC from the manufacturers and selling them...

Won't taking the thermo out make it run hot? As the water has hardly any time to cool in the radiator? I think mine is stuck open as my heat blows cold and dash reads 3/4. I need to do timing and waterpump as well though so mine could be anything and everything. I'm just having a hard time with this car. Bought it running for 1200 and straight body with clear title. I have had some cooling problems like mummy but last night, it was running at 1/4, heat still blowing cold. Any ideas? Please help me reduce this headache.

I didnt think a thermostat would make it blow cold air. i thought the only thing that determined that was the heater core? heater core would also explain the over heating. I'm actually doin this same thing on a 86 supra right now :(

Do u have the fans correct? -- a pusher- pushing or a puller- pulling. Have u checked the engine temps with a heat gun? Maybe the cts is reading incorrect. Have u did a co2 test on the cooling system? Are both the upper and lower hoses the same temp? (when it is overheating?) A guy just had his 2g 7bolt in the shop for the same prob he changed everything, I checked the engine temp with a heat gun it was 190 but the gauge read 3/4. so i chanded out the sender for the guage and she is fixed.

The fans are workin properly and i dont have a heat gun but i've been trying to hook my laptop up and see what its reading but i'm having problems connecting so i haven't got an actual reading yet

im having a over heating problem too guys. the fans were not coming one so i did the wire jump thing and now they are both on all the time but it is still over heating like 3/4 of thee way, just to the top of the little water sign, but when im driving it will go down like 1st and 2nd gear and then 3rd after i let off the gas a littile it will go up a little and then in 4th when im just cruising the temp will go up to 3/4 but if i get on it the temp will go down. what do you guys think? maybe the crappy autozone thermostat is not opening all the way or something.

I had the same problems and mine turned out to be coolant temp sensors...make sure you change those as well before you have to go through the hassle of doing the timing and water pump.
OH AND NEVER BUY FAILZONE CRAP! LOL it always breaks.

Wire jump makes me think your temp sensor went out, that or the temp sensor on your fans. Burp they system if you've lost coolant as the engine can suck air in if your tank ran below the pick-up point and you'll get steam pockets inside your engine that can drive you nuts. Run the car up to temp with the radiator cap off, wait, I just typed all this up within the last couple days! Look through the recent posts and it'll be explained. Oh, and only replace your t-stat with factory parts, all the rest seem to crap out pretty quick and their gaskets are prone to leak.

well my enigine coolant temp sensor is brand new so is the water pump. the thermostat is new too but i think its is getting stuck. the top rad hose is hot but he bottom hose was cold and im also thinking that thats why my fans are not turning on because the coolant is not even reaching the sensor. i tried burping the system and i took the rad cap off and put the funnel in there and let the car run and the coolant would just rise up the funnel and alot of air bubbles would come out and wouldnt stop and the coolant was not flowing at all. could this be the thermostat?
