 hey guys whats up? ive been lookin for answers and havent found them. i have a 97 gsx. it drives fine, but when i turn into A PARKING SPACE IT LOCKS UP. ALSO WHEN I AM TURNING IN REVERSE. It feels like when goin forward, it is on the driver side. and when reversing. it just feels like it locks up. also when i get on it in first, it kind of knocks. i lifted it and when i spun the front passenger the the front driver turned as well. and when i turned the front driver the rear passenger turned. when i turned the rear passenger the rear driver turned. first awd i have owned so anything would help thanks.

Dude, that's weird, I'd stop driving the car NOW until you figure out what's up.

no have not had any recall done on it. haven't had it long. i was thinking about switching the transfer case. would that be a good place to start? i don't drive it a whole lot. been driving my truck but i want to drive the gsx. thanks for the responses.

im not sure, how can i check? i think i have a leak in the front transfer maybe? the box next to the tranny. hell of annoying want to get it fixed don't know where to start. thanks again.

You mean: How can you check if it has a welded center diff or a VCE? You would have to take your transmission apart. Otherwise you could take part of your rear driveshaft out, and see if your car drives in FWD mode.

I'm not sure what you mean by "it locks up", but if you don't have the problem when driving on dirt, grass, or snow, then it's quite possible someone modified it from AWD to 4WD before you owned it.

It's not your T-case. You can find out if your center diff is locked up if you put the entire car on jackstands and have a friend help you turn either both front wheels or both rear wheels. Be sure to have it in gear when you do this. If you start feeling a lot of resistance, and you start turning the motor over, you have a locked up/welded center diff.

OR it could just be an extremely bad off CV joint. Do you hear a clicking sound if you just turn it a little?

like when i am going slow to turn into a parking space or something it stops, i have to give it gas so it will continue to go and when it does it feels like it wants to hop. my toyota seem like it does the same thing when i am in 4 low. because the guy who had that before me put a automatic rear end which i guess has different gears could it be the same problem? thanks for your help. i appreciate it.

If you had a different gear ratio in the rear, it would do that going straight too. The problem is that you have a 4WD car, and a 4WD truck. That's why they both do that.

If you drive in a circle, and look at your tracks, you'll notice that the front wheels travel farther than the rear. It would then stand to reason that your front wheels would need to travel faster than the rears to cover the greater distance in the same amount of time right? So if you have a VCE or a welded center diff, or a truck with 4WD....

Is any of this making sense?

Please post on the thread. I'll copy and paste this PM there in case anyone else ever needs to understand how this stuff works.

Ps. I'll buy that VCE off you if you don't want it.

I know the 1g auto and 5 spd rears are different gear ratios, if 2g's are the same, then you could have fried the center diff.

thanks for all your help. guys, i am going to lift the car when i get a chance and c if it trys to turn over. hopefully it is an easy fix. when i step on it i hear a real bad clank or thud, it might be a really bad axle, i will have to take it apart and check as soon as i have a chance. but thank you all for the help.:(
