OK guys here it goes,

i need you guys opinion on a purchasing situation,
I an currently looking at a 1998 eagle talon esi turbo conversion a/t, with 75000 miles on it for 7200 dollars,
It has a hahns 16g turbo, hahns side mount intercooler, greddy type s bov, walbro fuel pump system, air breather, apex i downpipe and exhaust system, injen intake, and aftermarket pistons, rods, bearings, new radiator and an extra hks bov that comes with purchace.

The second option is a 1997 tsi fwd, 95000 miles a/t with a turbo timer , injen cold air intake, hks bov and an apexi exhaust system. all for 7900 dollars.

I guess my question is wich car sounds to be more reliable??
would the esi turbo be faster than the tsi?? 1/4 mile et's, 0-60 times??
and wich one would you guys purchace if you had a choice?

oh yea before i forget, what would an esi a/t tranny with the hahns stage two kit, quartermile et's be in relation to a stock tsi fwd manual tranny??

i agree you could buy a well built 1g car for 7900 ...either way i would stay away from the esi its probly a chrysler engined car and there only so much power before the chrysler stuf can take with a turbo the bottom ends are weak even compared to a 7 bolt mitsu like the 97 has

yeah the esi has a crysler motor in it. don't want that.

I wouldn't dare touch that ESi turbo conversion nonsense. You are just buying somebody's headache. Plus it has the weaker AT trans.

The TSi, on the other hand, sounds like a cream puff. Since it's mostly stock, it gives you a good basis to start your mods. Plus it's a 4g63 which is obviously the better platform to modify.

Agreed.....

i agree with the two guys above. The Tsi would be much more reliable. Turboing the 420a often leads to reliability issues. People say the 4g63 is unreliable, but putting it up to a turbo 420a. I would take a 4g63 in a heartbeat. Go with the TSI. Stock is always better. Then you know whats been done to it.

Chk consumer reports and you'll see all black marks for the neon 420a motor. I don'ts think tuboing makes it more reliable :D:

And the point about a weaker 420a trans can't be overlooked either. In fact if it's the same trans that the neon uses it's a piece of crap.

The 4g63 is a very strong motor and reliable and so is the auto trans and the stock turbos. What are the reliability issues with the 4g63 anyway? The motor is solid. It's things like boost leaks and bad ecu's that come to mind but the engine itself is solid acccept if you get crankwalked and that only happens on sonme M/T 2g's. I bought my '91 tsi 8 yrs ago w/ 67,000 mi. For the next 90,000 mi and 7 years I ran the mostly stock car really hard on a daily basis w/ no engine, trans, or turbo problems. At about 155,000 mni I upped the boost w/out a gauge and a few thousand miles later I payed for it  but now 10,000 mi later and w/ less than 30 psi compression on 1 cyl its still going. For a while there I actually was runnining on 3 cyl when that bad cyl ate a sparkplug. Still running the car -- it just won't die :thumb:

There are few main problems that I see when buying a used 70,000+ mi dsm.

1) These cars are meant to, are fun to, and are driven pretty hard by its owners so by the time you get a used one that's 5+ yrs old the engine might not be in top shape anymore. A simple compression test will give you a good idea of what shape the motor is in.

2) You get idiots (like me) who boost their stock turbos w/out a real boost gauge, no egt or datalogger to let them know how much they are damaging their motors and turbos not to mention faiing to do other essential mods before boosting. This of course causes 'reliability' issues -- it would with any engine.

3) Others do the proper mods but running an extra 100+ HP on stock internals are going to cause more 'reliabilty' issues than running stock.

4) DSM'ers as a whole are into modding their cars for power more so than any other 4 cyl imports out there so there will be more reliabilty issues as compared to people who leave their cars stock -- it's the nature of the game, you play you pay, it's always been that way when it comes to power modding.

IMO, if you want reliabilty get a honda or toyota and keep it stock -- they probably won't dissapoint.

If performance is what you want no matter what you get is going to require more maintenance than the ordinary commuter car. If you mod for power you have to put money aside for things that break. DSM's or Vettes, Stangs, or Supras -- they are not going to have the reliabllty of a stock new civic.
If I'd driven my talon like a half sane person there is no doubt the engine would've lasted at least 250,000+ mi. But I bought the car to drive it hard -- the fact that it gets me from point A to point B is incidental. Try beating on a turbo neon, cobalt ss, or impallaa ss for 7+ yrs and let me know how reliable they are.

Rihgt now I'm looking for a 92-94 tsi and I'm hoping to get one from a person who isn't into or even knows about the dsm scene -- believe it or not there are more than a few out there -- they're driving stock tsi's and get tired of paying the dealer or other incompetents big $$$ to maintain their beloved cars and decide to sell. This is how I got my '91 tsi in realy nice shape -- completely stock and from what I could tell not driven very hard :thumb:
