Hi im new to engine swapping etc, but I wondering if this engine looks good. He selling for $400. Looks like head has been resurface and pressure washed. Needs valves though.
This is what is included.
  • Intake Manifold
  • 7Bolt Head
  • 7Bolt Short Block
  • Lifters, Camshaft caps, Oil Dip Stick, etc

He did mention he saw shavings and recommend to rebuild oil pump or replace it. I tried moving the crankshaft to see if there was any play. didnt move at all.

With an engine that looks like that i would not take his word for anything, not that you shouldn't trust him but that there shouldn't be anything skipped as far as inspecting the head and block for serviceable limits and tolerances.

just by the pictures, my judgement is that you will either buy a halfassed block for 400.00 which it could be an alright deal if all the parts end up in good condition after an inspection.

or

You just end up buying 400 dollars worth of pretty looking scrap metal.

$400 seems a little high for what I see.

The head with cam caps, clean and surfaced... about $100-$150 tops

That dirty locked up short block, that may or may not have a decent crank... $50-$75

But untill the bottom end is checked out... it is nothing more than a possiable rebuildable core....

If all the rods are an even golden brown color.. it stands a better chance of being ok.

If one or 2 of the rods are black around the big end of the rods.. that is a bad spun bearing.

Id have him take the crank out and have a look at the rod and main bearings to make sure a rod wasn't spun.

Ok and what are the signs of a spun rod?

You will need the cam caps for that head.
He has those. In a bag not pictured.

You can't spin a rod, check the bearings, you'll know it when you see it. Spinning the bearing is when the bearings actually spin. Bearings should be locked in place by the tang on them. If they're spun you'll a very heavy wear pattern on them that will look very different compared to your other rod bearings

You really need to inspect that block I had a guy try and sell me block with a broke rod and replaced it burthen rod chipped the cylinder wall where to had to rotate the crank to see it so be careful

Like Bogus stated 400 is alot.

I would see if he could at least take pics of the main and rod bearing for you.
