You don't need one, but if you have the eprom already it'd be nice to get it socketed and get a chip from DSMChips. If you have the eprom then it should run you under $200, if not I wouldn't worry about it and just get the SAFC. Either way you should have the SAFC.

Just like everyone else said, you dont need the eprom ecu for the safc or safcII, but you do need it for the DSMLink, so if you are planning on getting the DSMLink later that is what you will need.

EDIT**If your not planning using anything over a 16G and injectors over 660's then you wont need the DSMLink.
With the DSMLink you will need a logger to download the software onto.
