Hey everyone. Time has come, and need a timing job done. Usually can figure stuff out myself, but and nervious cuz i dont wanna kill my car. How hard is it to do a timing job? Its crazy expensive to take to a shop to do, trying to save myself $500 if i could do it myself.

I do have a good knowledge of my car, and of the engine.

Whats everyone think?

yea i know about the VFAQ, i read over it. Just curious as to how hard it really is. Can someone who has never done one do it solo. If not, anyone in NOVA, with the knowledge of how to do it wanna gets some hands on, i know i could use the help. Let me know, will be buying the stuff soon.

its actually quite easy, i did it myself for the first time, with the motor still in the car, and only took me about 4 hrs not knowing what i was doing. i just have to go in there and see everything first hand and it will all come together

it's not impossible. just take your time. it's not too hard to take it all apart, but be careful when you put the belt on and turn the engine over with a breaker bar to make sure your valves and pistons aren't hitting. i just did mine 2 weeks ago. you'll need a timing light to set your ignition timing. don't forget to change tensioners, idler pulleys and water pump too

its really easy as long as everything is on the marks and u make the exhauist cam one tooth off from the intake so it pulls tension up top, not below and pulling the crank and oil pump off timing.

Its actually pretty simple if you ahve someone to help you out with it, all you have to do is get all the timing marks lined up how they are supposed to be. taking out all the screws out of the timing belt cover can be a bish though sometimes.

whats with the timing light? what are you supposed to set and how?

after you put the belt on - aligned with all the marks of course, you will need to set the ignition timing. This is done by aiming the timing light on the mark that is on the main lower pullet (the one on the crankshaft), and adjusting the camshaft sensor (the big thing on the end of the valve cover on the end opposite the timing belt). you will need to loosen the two bolts on the camshaft sensor first. as you rotate the sensor you will see the timing mark move on the pulley (rather you will see it move in relation to the plastic tab on the lower tb cover).
you should get a $10-$15 haynes manual at any parts store, it covers the procedure pretty well.

i just realized you have a 94. its a little different on 97 and later cars or at least the cars with the newer cam angle sensor. the newer style sensors are fixed. so all that is needed is to make sure your timing belt is properly aligned.
