Disable Steering Wheel Lock

For the Chump Car race series I need to disable the steering wheel lock on my '93 Eclipse GSX. I've been reading around and am close, but could use some guidance.

This link has some directions but I'm not following where they're removing the actual lock.

The car is gutted so everything is pretty accessible. I have the lock cylinder out and can see how the steering wheel lock mechanism is functioning, but not sure how to get to it to remove/disable it.

There is a round plate on the side of the locking mechanism held in by some pins. I'm debating pulling out the plate, but suspect it will be trashed in the process so I don't want to be wrong.

Any thoughts?

Rather than disabling the system, I have cut some thin aluminum (not as thin as a soda can) to fit and inserted it between the lock and the steering shaft. I'm sure your experience will vary on this one as I have not tried this on a dsm.

I thought about doing that inside the locking mechanism, but I'm worried if it shifted it would jam the lock cylinder.
