DIN Radio Pocket [Merged 12-6] filler box cubby hole trim

I was thinking about doing this myself. But, I ran out of money. I have an Evo 8 CD player and was going to put an in dash flip out screen above it and a PS2 in the glovebox. Then, I realized I'm a poor college student.

Everything is feasible.

You said OEM radio? Are you implying that you picked up just a regular 1 din radio eg sony, panasonic, aiwa, etc..?

OEM aka original equipment manufacturer. The stock Mitsubishi/Infinity radio, not a Sony, Panasonic, Aiwa, etc. aftermarket radio.

Any Mitsubishi, or Infinity radio built for Mitsubishi installation will plug into a 2G Eclipse or Talon. Depending on the specific radio, you will probably have to unplug the speaker harness from the amp under the passenger seat, if now equipped.

Thank you sir. I assumed any would fit. I just wanted to double check. So any one who has the stock Infinity system sound, as I do, should replace the head unit with another Infinity one because of the head unit & amp setup?

The DIN hole left will accomodate virtually any DIN electronic device on the market.
If a 1-DIN monitor is available (the market's still too rich for me to look into), it will fit.

Nice. It's just that it looks like it would fit but, all the install kits I see online make the top DIN bulky and only leave room for a 3 CD pocket. There are a few 1 DIN monitors available, I wanna pick up one to play mp3's, GPS and run my DSMLink.

I saw this on cardomain, it's some guy's european-spec 2GA, i was wondering if anyone else has seen anything like this. I really like the way it looks, maybe i can make one myself? I have converted the factory double-din to a single-din Alpine head unit, and have just a blockoff plate for the bottom din and was wondering maybe should i put my turbo timer there, or this clock setup.

i also just noticed this, but look at the far left A/C vent control knob - it's different than my US-spec 2GB, at least

I never seen anything exactly like it. The only thing that i've seen somewhat close to it is what Slow Boy Racing has for their SAFC and gauge bezel.

A DIN is a DIN. Any vehicle with a DIN will fit. DIN stands for Deutsche Industrie Normale (don't quote me on the spelling even thought I lived in Germany for 3 years). How do you think CD players fit all cars?!

You will need to find someway to support the cup holders above. If you don't that thing will come out with the weight of the cups.

I say get the kit, most likely you will just need to get 2 plastic sheets and just custom mount those onto the stock ISO and then onto the brackets that came with it. If you do it correctly, you will not need to reinforce it unless you plan on putting 2 big gulps on it (remember brackets have to hold in that cd player which is heavier than any drink.....although it is at an angle...

The idea of having a DIN size is so that all cars use the same size. I agree that the holes will not match up, but it doesn't take a lot of effort to fabricate a bracket or to drill new holes on the side mounting plates.

It will fit but theres a reason the cupholder in your car is not there.What happens when you mash the brakes because some 22yo blonde on her phone pulled out in front of you in a hummer that will never see dirt?... your radio is fried.I would never put any liquid that close to the radio.

A few things.....

1. DIN is DIN. The size of the cup holder assembly will fit and fill the space under the radio just fine.

2. Yes, of course you would be required to fab brackets to mount the assembly. The included brackets will most likely not fit anything but an MR2, but that does not mean that it isn't possible to make this fit in a DSM

3. It would not be handy to have two large cups sitting in a holder in front of your radio controls.

4. If your car has a manual transmission (this may apply to automatics also), this cup holder assembly will interfere with your gear shifter when in 1st, 3rd, and 5th gear.

2G's did have an option to have a removeable cup holder that sat in the center councel. If a cup holder is that important to you, that is what I'd recommend locating.

i have a 95gst, with the infinity deck which ive been told is DIN? and is going to cost extra money to convert it over... so can i just buy a DIN deck off ebay and plugNplay?
also i see Double DIN, mine is single din?

could sparkplugs wires be making my car have a slight tapping sound? you can only hear it when the hood is poped and you are listening for it, but it sounds like it is comming right near the plug wires

i was changing the sparkplugs and there was oil all down in the 2nd cylinder, im sure it was all over the tip of the wire where it connects to the plug, but i cleaned it off. could it be screwing with things though?

DIN is a size used universally. DIN stands for Deutsche Industrie Normalle. You can get any CD player that is 1 DIN and it will fit the hole in your car.

DSMs have 2 DIN space meaning you can put 2 CD players on top of each other or get a 2DIN CD or DVD Player or get a 1DIN cd player and put a pocket under it.

Best Buy is terrible for car audio installs. Do not even touch them, if your getting it installed by other people get it installed at circuit city. I work in the circuit city install bay and I can tell you there is a large difference in knowledge and experience. Crutchfield would do even better, but they are expensive and for small things like headunits you dont need really good people.

That said, forget about having them install it.

First step, go to circuit city and get a smart harness that connects without any wiring to your stock harness, then get a metra harness for your particular radio (pioneer get a pioneer metra harness, sony get a sony metra harness). That will cost all of like 9 bucks.

Now to install, pop off that little trim piece sorrounding your ac buttons. Then remove the two screws at the top holding your center console in. Remove your cup holder in the middle by simply pulling up on it and it should pop out. Two screws will be there that you have to remove. Then on each side of the center console in the back will be two screws. Take those out. Now simply take off your shift knob by twisting it off. Pull the shift boot up off the shifter assembly by simply pulling up on it. Now pull the whole center console up and disconnect the cigarette lighter wires by simply pulling on the tabs. Now get that center console out of your way.

Now you should see your radio held in by metal mounts, called ISO mounts. It is held in by four screws which are very obvious. Take those 4 out and start pulling your head unit out with the metal tabs attached. It will not come out very far before you start pulling on the wires at which point you remove the antenna and harness from the factory radio.

Take this whole assembly over to a bench or something. Remove the four screws holding in your factory radio to the metal tabs. Then take your new radio and remove that little metal cage sorrounding the radio. Simply do that by using a pick and pull up on the two metal pieces on the sides. Slide the cage off.

Simply bolt in your new radio into the metal tabs. Then if you bought a pocket kit install that now. Now take your metra and smart harness and connect them to the stock radio harness, all they do is clip in together. Then take your new radio with metal tabs attached (and pocket) and put it on your lap next to where your going to mount the radio. Hook in the harness to your radio along with the antenna and test to make sure its working. It will definitely work unless your missing a fuse somewhere, as now wiring was needed, you have to be an idiot to mess up clicking in harnesses. They will only click in the right way.

Now just bolt it up as it was stock and reverse all the steps above for taking out your center console.

Itll maybe take you 30-60 minutes the first time you do it. It takes me maybe 10 minutes at most to remove my center console, install the new radio, and put back the center console. IT is REALLLLYYY EASY!! Do it yourself!

I wish I could've found that; I went to Circuit City, Best Buy... all the electronics stores around, and the cheapest I could find any of the harnesses for was $20 - a piece! I would've gotten an eBay one for $4, but I didn't feel like waiting. Oh well.

Best Buy is terrible for car audio installs. Do not even touch them, if your getting it installed by other people get it installed at circuit city.

I second not getting an install at Best Buy. My brother got some subs installed there and when he got the car back the fog lights didn't work. A friend of his had an amp and subs installed there and when they mounted the amp down they drilled through his gas tank.

I had an alarm installed at Circuit City and everything worked fine, except for the fact that they ran my front clip into the curb and chipped my paint, but they gave me $400 to get it fixed. I'd personally say install yourself, it's not that hard, and it's a learning experience.

Yes, by-pass the factory amp. Your aftermarket deck will have an amp built into it. Pull the stock amp out and sell it on eBay (they actually go for a decent amount of money) and then you'll need to run new speaker wires to your speakers from the aftermarket deck.

Check ebay for all your harness, brackets and wiring needs. It might take a 3-4 days to get to you, but it'll be cheaper. There is a harness available that goes from the infinity amp to the stock radio location.
