Did I port too far?

I've looked at all the threads but never saw a picture of too much porting. The drill slipped and I think I've ported too much on my 90 OFH. Can someone tell me if I'll be able to squeak by with this or will I need to be more careful with the next one?

Sorry but that's the closest I can get with this camera and the angled shots wash out with the flash.

New engine build with BSE but I left the oil squirters in. I'm running CP 9.0-1 pistons (.20 over) with eagle rods and ACL race bearings. New oem water and oil pump with new gears. BC 272 cams, springs, and retainers. I'll start with an E316G turbo @~12psi. I don't want to blow all the new oem seals and gaskets while breaking it in, hence my porting the OFH while it's still out of the car.

Well I'd like it to idle under 1k with the 272's if possible. I'll more than likely break the engine in on straight 30W for the initial 50 miles or so before going to 10W-30 dino and after 2-3k mobil 1 synthetic once it's fully broke in. My main concern is that I ported slightly past the raised ring on the relief piston. I have another housing available once I pull the engine currently in the car if I need it but while I found plenty of pics of 'good' porting jobs (yours included), I couldn't find any pics of a bad one. How far (if at all) past that ridge is it 'safe' to go? My car hasn't moved since October when the water pump seized and I've been collecting parts for this engine since before then. I just got laid off so there isn't any room/money for errors at this point. If the engine I'm building now goes... there won't be another in the works for quite some time :sosad: so I'd like to do it right the first time.

Is there anyone who can say for sure if this is ported too far? I really need to know.

Thanks!

I would say that it is. You went past the bottom of the piston and the port doesnt look very smooth. I just ported mine but forgot to take pictures. Make sure the next one you port you use a digrinder instread of just drilling it out. and dont port past the bottom of the piston and make sure to clean up the port to make it smooth.

That's what I needed to know for sure, that going past the ring on the piston was too far. I pretty much stopped after the drill jumped. If it hadn't been too far, I would have finished squaring it off and enlarging the rest of the whole for easier pressure relief. As it was, I understand that the actual size of the port wasn't near wide enough to be as effective as I'd want. Hopefully someone will tack one of the pictures up as what is too far in. Good thing I have a spare I guess...
