I put some Synchromesh in my car today, but it doesn't feel better. As a matter of fact, it feels worse. I think that I may have put too much fluid in the tranny.* What happens when there's too much?

Right now, the shifting feels even notchier, I'd say, and it's hard to get it into 1st.

*A very small amount of it was still slowly dripping out when I put the plug back in.

did you have the car at a big angle when you filled the tranny, or did you jack it up an all four sides?
usually it doesn't matter if you overfill the tranny by a little. i would say the notchy shifting comes from the weight of the fluid you put in there. does the notchyness change with temperature? (get better or worse when at operating temperature)

It was a small uphill incline, but not too major.

Tomorrow, I'm gonna go to a flat area, take the fill plug off, shove in the rest of the synchromesh I have left, and let it ALL trickle out.

My fill plug is 18mm by the way, not 17. how strange! It says OIL on it too.

What about the temperature? does it change teh shifting? I would think that syncromesh is a little thin.

Dont expect sychromesh to work as soon as you pour it in the tranny. It takes time before you feel any results.

I see. I think I felt it get a little better.

About how long does it take til you feel it?

Dude syncromesh is crap. I just went with mobil one for the first time and it is way better. And by the way the manual transaxle requires 2.8 qts. Not a drop more. If you dont have any way to measure this properly then make sure that the car is on a good level spot and open the fill plug. If any comes out, let it. Dont plug it up till it stops. Then go drive it. I garuntee yur gonna feel a difference. I destroyed a tranny once cause it was too full. of syncromesh. Also you dont want anything thicker than 85/90.

I used Synchromesh for the first time not to long ago when i redid my clutch. Its 10x better then before I love this stuff. Give it time, I remember it taking a couple days before it got real nice and smooth.

yea depending how much you drive I would say you can notice it for sure within a week. It will get better and better.

man u guys are gunna think i'm stupid...but, what exactly is synchromesh...i've never serviced the tranny or clutch on mine..but when i do, i wanna know what to use...and what does it do that's so different?

Synchromesh is gear oil for manual transmissions. It's usually recommended for helping alleviate grinds and notchiness when shifting.

To be specific its, Pennsoil Syncromesh. I could only find it at Auto Zone here in the Seattle area. Its like anywhere between 6 and 9 dollars a quart. Your gonna need 2.8 qts. Supposedly the gear fluid is designed to coat your trannys guts with a super slik solution so that it shifts better. Or something like that. IMHO its a load of hooey. I used Syncromesh for 7 months and it did nothing out of the ordinary for my tranny. Ive used it in two different trannys before I decided to go with the Mobil 1 equivilant. ( 75/90 ) now I noticed a difference. Same price. Immediate noticable difference. my 2 cents

check and see if it is GL-5 or GL-4. I read on the VFAQ.com to NEVER put GL-5 in your transaxle because GL-5 transaxle fluid contains a additive that is corrosive to the syncros. When I performed my ACT 2100 swap, I just went to O'Reilly's and got some GL-4 and its shifts like butter. I have 5,884 miles since the clutch job.

My .02

It may be an improvement for now, but when it eats your syncros.... Mobil 1 is GL-5 rated, which you don't want to use in a DSM tranny

The bottle doesn't say if its GL-4 or GL-5. I heard that people recommend synchromesh because it doesn't corrode the synchros.

It also says on the bottle that it is for used for Gm and chrysler manual transmissions and is compatible with yellow metals. Bronze, copper...All I can say is just try it and give it a while, but as seen above, some people dont see a difference.

I definitely feel a difference now when actually driving. It feels brand new. But when sitting still and moving the shifter around, it feels notchy.

I use real GM Syncromesh from the dealer, works great. If you think you over filled the trainy do what someone else said, take it to level ground, take the plug out and let the oil come out till it stops then replug it. Mitsubishi dealership says the tranny is made to be filled on level ground, you cant just have the front jacked up. Drive the car, then park it somewhere over night and check for leaks under the car in the morning. If you have to put cardboard under the car. Also for anyone hating on Syncromesh, before i bought mine i asked Shepherd if using this oil in our trannys was ok, his exact words were Its fine to use if your car is streep/strip, if your only racing the car, Then use Royal Purple. There ya go, just thought i would add my experience.
