Datalogger hookup

Okay I searched around and I couldn't quite find my answer, I bought a logger cable of ebay a while back for my palm, got it all hooked up right but took it out, now a few months later im going to hook it all back up and I forget the pinouts, the Cable has a red wire (power) and a brown and orange, i forget what does what, I seem to remeber being able to plug all 3 into the diagnostic port not fuses, but I forget which is power on the Diagnostic port, I found the ground, but I dont know which wire is ground, ahH! Help?

I don't think that's the one he's looking for. He has the earlier version that has the red, brown and orange wires.

It's not like there is a standard for wiring these things or that your typical eBay seller would follow the standard it there was one.

One thing you can count on is that pin 5 on the DB9 is ground and the wire attached to it goes to pin 12 on the DLC.

Passive cables without auto-on will have either one wire with two connectors daisy chained or two wire that are connected together back at the DB9 and will measure as shorted with a multimeter. These go to pins 10 and 12 and the other wire is the data wire and goes to pin 1.

Auto-on connectors have additional circuity on the wire that goes to pin 10 making it harder to check which is which.

Depending on which device the cable is for (you can tell by the DB9 connector gender) the data wire connects directly to pin 2 (pc) or 3 (palm) on the DB9 and through a diode to the other pin.

From those clues you should be able to identify which wire is which.

Only active cables have power wires and most of those have something other than loose spade connectors for the DLC end.

You can read the codes using just about any of the 1G dataloggers but the ECU code on '90 ECU's is missing the function to clear them in the datalogger interface so you'll have to disconnect the battery to clear them.

The VFAQ site also has the manual procedure to read the codes and what the codes mean.

Keep in mind that the car's voltage ranges up to 14v and 5000mcd is pretty brite so you can get away running less than 20ma all the time.
