damn, porting takes FOREVER

ok, first off. dont ever buy the grinding kit for air die grinders from harbor freight. you cut about 5 parts grinding wheel to 1 part metal. what a joke. id use them for polishing. where can i find a good tough cutting stone? im going to try the local rural king tomorrow and maybe head to lowes. the o2 housing has a ridiculous amount of material that needs out. gonna be a long day tomorrow boys..

i just ported my 14b today, took about 2 and a half hours and the carbide burr was still fine. I just sprayed wd40 on the bit every 5-10 minutes or so.

Yeah man you definatly shouldn't be using a grinding stone.....if you are, go buy a carbide burr and get it done. I've never spent more than an hour or two doing manifolds and turbo housings

I would try Bumper to Bumper or some auto parts store. if your serious about porting a good tool is important. Napa has good tools as well.

Yeah, you need a carbide bit. Stones just disintegrate if you try to use them for more than deburring or polishing.

You need long shank carbide deburs, take your time becareful .and watch porting videos on youtube, very helpful

Agreed with all the above, I just ported my manifold a few weeks ago. I used carbide bits for three quarters if it and touched it up with a grinding stone. It's all about the patience

bam, theres my problem. carbide bit. got it. im going to lowes tonight to see what they have. getting a good quality one. i have to port exhaust, o2, and prob the wg hole and turbo outlet(when i get it next friday). im going to have EVERYTHING done by next sunday. just waiting on machinist.

The sandpaper rolls work real good for cleaning up too. You can get the shank and the rolls at harbor freight for $ 10 I think

yea i have some real good red rolls now. they can actually cut pretty well ive heard but havent tried them on cast iron. this cast is hard material

Keep in mind that there are single cut and double cut carbide burs. I used a double cut bur on my EVO3 manifold/turbine/O2 housing. Only later did I have an opportunity to try a friend's single cut bur. I wish I had tried it sooner. The single cut seemed to cut much faster and easier.

Assuming you're referring to your stock 2G O2 housing, you would hate the EVO3 exhaust manifold. The supposedly higher nickel content (for better heat tolerance) makes porting it a real bear.

i used a dremmel with their tan triangular stone on my 02. It took 2 stonez and about 2 hours. I have pics postedon here just look through my topics....too lazy to retrieve the thread .

I ported my turbine housing couple days ago. Took an hour with the carbide bit. I wouldn't use anything else. They're around $15 at mcmaster

As a machinist I work with cast iron and all grades of stainless steel. The carbide bits are definitely a must have. I just did my evo316g instal and had to port O2 and with bits I "borrowed" from work it only took me roughly 30 minutes....

got a carbide bit today for 22 bucks at a rural king. only place i coluld find that stocked them. took about 2 hours and got the outlet of the exhaust mani and all 3 holes of the o2 housing ported out and polished. doesnt look bad either. my turbo will be in next friday so ive only gotta port the wg hole. should be good then.
