I had a B&M in my 95 eclipse before I sold it. I took it out and still have it. Used it for 6 months, $75.00 if anybody wants it.

) So, in my opinion, DO NOT waste your money on a original B&M shifter. The throw is amazingly short, I set it at the 50% reduction. I recently sat in a dodge viper srt-10 on demo, and I honesly felt no difference from the throw of that and my car. They felt exactly the same, no kidding.

The short shifter doesnt change the height of the shifter (at least not in our cars) but it does change the throw.
Theres a peice that moves the point at which the new lever will rotate upon. (Its usually blue)
This blue peice is what actually makes it a short shifter.
If you just cut your old lever, sure it will make it shorter, but it will also be harder to shift. Its like a wrench, the longer it is the more leverage you can get.
So when you shorten this lever you will get much less leverage.
I would say just put your short shifter in and you will see the physics of it. I highly recommend not cutting your original shifter.

wow that was a really good explanation. i would like to incorporate both. i want to make it shorter in height AND in the actual throw.
