Custom Cams?

I believe you mean custom ground cams. I have a set thats ground slighty more aggressive than a HKS 272.

If you do go custom, make sure you know what you want and what you need. Make sure they harden the cam surfaces too.

With all of the different cams out there for the 4g63, I don't really see much point in getting custom ground cams, unless you plan on making 1000hp.

I agree with you 100%. Unless your mid 9's or faster, there really is no need for custom cams IMO. With so many cams on the market for the 4g, you can easily find something affordable that can range from mild like 264's, to crazy like 288's, etc.

However, I did notice last time as I was at Crowers website, they will do custom grinds.

I think all of the major cam manufacturers will do custom grinds. I know for sure that Crane, Comp, and Crower will do them.

FFWD DKS cams are all regrinds and they are pretty cheap with a stock core.

Im just wondering if anyone is having cams ground to there setup? I never really hear it talked about much thats why im asking..

crane dose a lot of custom cams. But you would need to be well versed if you were to order some as there are a lot of specs to take into consideration not just Degree and lift.

I think no one really talks about it because if NEED something bigger then what's offered publicly (almost .500" lift now) your probably doing alot of drag racing with your car. And giving out your secrets makes it harder to win. I can tell you that shep is running cams from comp that are over .500" lift, but I'm not going to say anything further. I'd contact Comp Cams... just my 2 cents though

Interesting, last I heard he was running a set from crane cams..... which are just under 500 lift.

You never hear about it because there is no setup you can mention that a common grind can't accomodate VERY well :p . Adjustable cam gears do the rest. There's MORE than enough out there to out cam yourself.

yeah I agree with matt, if you can show us a log or something that proves that your over running a crower 615 cam or a BC or HKS 288 cam setup then you need a custom grind cam.. is your profile up to date ?

The fact of the matter is there are bigger cams ALREADY designed. That are quite bigger then you think. I personaly have a set of .484 lift and they were not designed my me. They are from higher up's and the truth is.... If you NEED them, you know the people to get in touch with and how to get them.
Matt

buying... making your own is really really expensive because you have to own alot of machines and buy blank cores to make them from! WTF

Whats more fun, making your own or buying.

Alright on that theory, there is ALOT of factors to a cam shaft that will change ALOT. examples- the gross lift, accelration ramp, duration then you have to look at valve overlap and so on and so forth. I am not to knowledged on cam profiling an all but these are just some higher points to think about.

Some people will get a chuckle from this thought...

Making cams is kinda like the "make at home beer kits", why waste your time when you can buy beer already......

Who cares. Hes just asking, not saying hes doing it. Its just a question.

The original poster cares. Why ask?

I'm assuming he's wondering of there's any customization that can yield an "ideal" cam for his paticular setup. The truth is, we all run similar systems to so many others that grds have been designed that accomodate which ever group you are in. All that's needed for personal customization is degreeing to insure what you have or to shift the powerband a little. And believe me, enough is there in a set of adjustable cam gears to give any thought-out cams a shot at being perfect for you.

There's more fun in other aspects of life but we can't get that on demand ;) . . . I think it's more fun to create something that perfects your setup and masters your goal and delving into other valve timing is neat. But in the end you'll endup with a cam that has a profile very similar to those offered. The DSM is not a new machine. Far too many have spend far too long under these hoods ;) .

Go for it though! If it makes you happy to play with cam profiles, please share! If you're still asking why one went custom then your clearly looking for a goal to the study and not the in between mush.

Amen. Right on the dot.
