I have searched every where and cant seem to find an answer. I have the block out of the car and am trying to remove the crankshaft. The flywheel is off as well as all the main caps. It is still attached to the front case and the timing gear. Does the front case have to be removed in order to take out the crank shaft?

From what I read some have mentioned just prying it apart. I have tried that and I must be doing something wrong. I will post a pic shortly so maybe someone can tell me where I am messing up.. Thanks.

Both front case and rear seal plate need to be removed in order to remove the crank. The crank runs through these so they will hold it from coming out.

Is it the silver sprocket thing that requires a special tool to remove the only thing holding it together? And do I really need a special tool to remove it?

Don't pry on it, you could deform things you don't want deforming.

Yes, the timing gear must come off and the front case, as said above, the crankshaft goes through both of them.

You can use a prybar or a long extension to lock the crank. Put whatever your using across the main webbings on the block and the crankshaft counterwieghts. You can then use a 1/2 in breaker bar to remove the bolt from the front of the crankshaft. The other two gears and plate will slide right off.

Or just use a 1/2 in impact.

Remove all of the bolts from the front cover/ oil pump and it should come right off.

First, thanks guys for the quick replies.

I have removed all bolts on the front case. The only things left on is the silver special lock and the timing gear. So the nut at the end of the timing gear comes off?

Don't worry about that special lock thing. Your balance shafts have been removed. The bolt behind that is only holding a stub shaft in place for your oil pump. Just leave it alone.

Get the crank bolt out and the two gears off and the cover will come off.

Heres the sprocket I'm talking about.

Ok thanks man.. Will try that soon.

Yup. That's the one. Leave it alone. From your pictures, I can see that there is no balance shaft behind it. When the balance shafts are removed a stub is bolted in the oil pump driven gear in place of the rear balance shaft. There is no reason to remove the bolt to the stub as it will not hinder the removal of the front cover.

Impact wrench is the best way to take it off. I'm install a bsek in mine and i'm having a problem getting the cover plate off too. It's moves about a half a inch then stops like it's hitting against something
