OK so I've got a real problem here that I've never run into before. I have a 96 eclipse 420a auto. So about 2 1/2 weeks ago I was driving along and started up a small hill and my car started whining, popped, and died all within 1-3 seconds. Got towed home and popes the hood to see that my timing belt came off (timing belt cover broke off a few months ago and haven't had a chance to replace yet) so I started tearing into it to find the cause. Got into it after a few days off fighting with the harmonic balancer after it broke and finally found that the culprit was my timing tensioner arm bolt had snapped.
Finally after 2 weeks of waiting, I got the new parts, inspected everything, and putting it all together i went to start it.
No go.

It has spark, has fuel and timing is perfect. However when cranking it doesn't sound like normal all you hear is the starter. I've visually checked and everything is spinning like it should when cranking and nothing is making sense
Then I thought maybe I bent or broke a valve or punched a hole in a piston. Got a compression tester and it doesn't move from zero at all on any of the 4.

I'm all out of ideas any and all thoughts/comments/suggestions are welcome as I miss my beloved DSM and I'm tired of driving the roommates 1990 stanza.

That's what I'm afraid of but I've never heard a DSM sound like it is right now. I mean you could always hear it cranking that's why I'm hoping it isn't either of those.

I wish cheapest I've seen is 200 and no one rents them out around here.
On a side note I noticed right before I pulled the fuel pump relay that each cylinder would blow the mist of fuel out of the spark plug chamber (up and out) also when I first tried to start it, it would pop kinda like a really weak backfire several times in a row before going back to what it was doing in the video.

OK so I popped the valve cover off this morning and had my wife crank it again and when the cam wasn't pushing down on the rockers there was at least an 1/8 in gap between the cam and rockers on the intake side. So I went and got some new valves got the old ones out, new ones in and discovered how bad it was, although I did get lucky with the pistons having no damage.

I'll finish putting it back together tomorrow and report back for future reference. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction MALaCasse.

Check all your fuses. I had the same problem a few days ago and I had a blown 30a fuse under the hood. It stopped the fuel pump from sending any gas. And so mine would just keep cranking without starting.

Thanks for the input man but I was getting fuel.

OK just got the head, cams, and valve cover back on should have it buttoned up here in the next hour or so and ready to try.

If y'all don't hear anything by 9 central its cause I've got a baby Dr appt.

OK so I set the timing and before anything else I cranked it sounded just like its supposed to awesome. put everything back together, hooked the ignition system back up tried it, 1...2...3...start

So thanks for the replays and ideas and confirming what I was afraid of

Yeah I know when I was taking the head off I was biting my nails hard cause I just knew there was gonna be holes in all the pistons but thankfully there wasnt.
And thanks to you for getting me to look closer at the valves
