so heres the deal i bought 92 tsi awd ran fine before i pulled motor but a flange was broke off the block so i bought a NT motor for like 75$ and im using the NT block for the car. i bought all new main and rod bearings and im using the rotating assembly from the old motor (ran fine before i pulled it) and i put it in the NT block without the rods on the crank spins perfect and then i put the rods on and it spins until i tighten them down even by hand, once its tight it doesnt spin unless i really reallt force it. any help?WTF

Without a doubt a bearing issue. You need to mic the crank to see what size it is an order bearings accordingly

i didnt do that, they said there was a switch after 3/31/92 in the bearing but i guessing thats the switch from a 6 bolt to a 7 bolt?

Also, did you mark the direction of the rod caps AND the rod they go to? They must keep their original orientation and pairing

yes i made sure i did all that

i have tried two different cranks as well, it doesnt work for either of them i have also tried two different sets of rods and i put the old bearings in and it workd and everywhere i have looked it says they are the right part. from sealed power part #4-3485CP car date is july of 91

You may have .25mm /.010 oversized bearings that would work on a undersized crank, but on a STD crank, it will lock up.

Look on the back of the bearing and see if it marked.

it gives the part number then says .25mm

Then thats the issue....

The old bearings and crank you tried and work is Std crank with std bearings = crank spins

The old STD crank with new .25mm oversized bearings = crank lock up

Either you ordered the wrong size bearings, or they were boxed wrong

oh ok i also ordered another set from napa same prt number but these bearings dont say .25mm so are those okay to use?

Should, however the tolerances must be checked and within spec (plastigauge) You may need to align hone the main bearings to match the crank..?

okay, turns out orielly had sent me oversized bearings instead of standard because there is a newer fella working there. kinda pissed he set me back a week on my build but at least the problem is solved, thank you for the help i wouldnt have noticed the bearins were oversized fi not for this thread!
