Hey guys I'v looked at some of the other threads and have not really found a solid answer. So why is the COP setup so hard to make work/tune with without a new ignition box? Some people say it will be fine but others say dont waste the money. I'm trying to make my engine bay look as clean as possible and my friend suggested to do this, but as I read I learned that there not always good. Any thoughts?

So I will give you a run down. I am making 550whp on one my dsm's and still on wires. You don't really need to worry about a cop setup unless the spark starts breaking up. They are more reliable some setups for them are cheap and you can never go wrong with them even on a stock daily driven car. So it's up to you but if you want to save time and exetra just stick with wires, but if you wanna do a cop there some great write ups. But my respect goes to sparktech for there awsome setup.

Yeah... no.

The reason that a COP setup is not very functional in the world of DSMs without an ignition system upgrade is very simple - Coils are made to fire individually. Our system uses a waste spark system. Coils are meant to have extra time between discharging to build a charge and deliver stronger and more consistent spark. when they are wired to work with our stock systems they do not function like this. They are still functional, but you get no performance gains. It does look very nice in your engine bay, however.

Stock Coils and Wires have supported very high horsepower numbers. Our ignition system is rather lovely. If you want to look into a proper COP setup, get ready to shell out a little cash for a proper Ignition system to work in conjunction with the COP, otherwise you're just slapping coils in place of wires.

A good example of the needed ignition upgrade to get a COP firing as it truly should and making a true difference in your ignition setup is to install something such as a Dynatek ARC-2 CDI.

Now, a few Pros of doing it without a new ignition setup? No more purchasing wires. No worries about wires being cut or nicked and delivering your spark into say, your head. Coils like these are usually more durable as well and thus last long than spark plug wires do - this eliminates purchasing a $50 set of sparkplug wires every time you accidentally drop your utility knife or screwdriver near your intake manifold.

I have known many people to wire up a cop setup and run just fine I don't see anything bad about switching to them. There are some awsome right ups on how to do a basic cop setup. The more fact is you probably don't really need one ever well I mean if you run over 600hp but yea ok, but still it's whatever.

Ok, so if I put them on without an ignition system upgrade will it affect anything untill i get one in the future? Or will it be the same as haveing plug wires?

So your suggesting something with no first hand experience?

Also why should someone wait to more then likely effectivly downgrade their ignition? at a higher HP level

99% of people on here are going probably run 300m/interped coil as that is what is in all the write ups... . Even if it works their are still the issues Keiya stated... .

These coils that A lot of people run are not the only option if someone is set on not running a Cdi... .

What coils would you suggest to run if I wanted to run stock ignition? I know it sounds stupid, but im just looking to clean up the engine bay a little and a chrome plate between my black VC with coils would be a nice touch.
