Hey guys, I have a dilema that you have probably heard before from others. My car seems to be misfiring. It backfires an sputters and at WOT stops at 3200 rpm and backfires the whole time. When I press on the gas slowly it will go up through the RPM's but sometimes misfire throughout above 2500 rpm. I suspect my coils are bad. I changed out my plugs and wires. I'm also getting a check engine light code P0170 which is the fuel trim error. I suspect its the coil pack. So while I am going to change them, should I just buy a new replacement OEM or would it be better jist to upgrade now to a Buschar COP setup?

If you think I have other issues other than the coils please chime in. Thanks.

Very rarely does the coil packs fail on a DSM, they are very reliable. Take your ECU and check the capacitors to see if they are leaking. There is also a possibility that your CAS or timing are off so check those out as well.

depends on you goals for power most people switch to cop for better control of firing but its not necessary the stock coil pack is fine up to i think around 400 hp after that i would switch to cop design id stay stock for now or go with an aftermarket coil pack.

Sorry I don't know my abbreviations. But what does CAS stand for? I feel dumb asking it.

Also how can I tell the capacitors are leaking? This would be my first time checking the ECU on a DSM so what/where do I look and what should it be doing/not doing. Thanks.

Your symptoms match mine when my coilpack failed.

Where did you purchase your new coil pack? I've been looking around and there was only 1 place I saw that had an OEM Coil pack for $165.

The stock coils are good for way more than 400hp. The only way to successfully run a COP system, is to use some sort of ignition amplifier or (CDI) . Some people may be able to get away without one at low power levels, but if you are going to be pushing any type of boost/HP you are going to need one. Dynatek Arc-2 and MSD Dis-2 are the norm CDI's people use. The problem is our cars run off wastespark and without getting into the issue deeply, the COP isn't exactly compatible with the spark charge and dwell time. Anyway... the bottom line is you really are not going to benefit a COP setup without a CDI, and even then you may have issues. The stock coils can handle tons of power and have proved themselves to be very reliable. A lot of people actually ditch the CDI and COP for a stock coil and CDI combo. Do your research and just know a good COP setup isn't cheap.($400-500).

Stock coils are all over the classifieds. People have tons of these from partouts and from having spares. I would try to pickup a used OEM for $20 and go from there.

Another thought is how are your plugs gapped?

Yea that's the first thing I checked when I replaced my plugs. I gapped them at .026-.028. Still same issue with the sputtering. I saw online that it helped some other people but didn't seem to fix my issue at all.

On a side note I think my car is running lean too because when I idle for a couple minutes and press on the gas and go there is a lot of white smoke. Goes away after a couple seconds. Sometimes if I idle long enough my car will shut off.

x2 Do not spend $150 on a part you can find used for $20. Like I said very rarely do coils go bad so chances are you will be buying a good one anyways so buy one, plug it in and see if it fixes your problem.

Sounds good, but how can I tell there coils are good or not?

Also do a boost leak test if you haven't already and have a clean fuel filter. What kind of plugs and wires did you use and what octane gas do you use? Was the car running good before or did you buy it like this? Has it been sitting for a while?

I put NGK bpr6es and NGK wires. I use 93 Octane gas. I got the car broken down. Wasn't running or anything. I had to replace the slave cylinder, master cylinder, clutch lines, clutch, and clutch fork. The clutch fork was broken so that was the reason why it wasn't turning on. Once it turned on and was running it ran like that. After I put on the plugs and wires it still ran the same but a little better but still sputtered above 2500 rpms. WOT and stops at 3200 RPM while backfiring.

Also I made sure I gapped the plugs to .026-.028.

I was actually going to buy a new fuel filter since I got a new fuel pump and fuelab afpr. I was going to install them once I got the fuel filter.

Also would a Coil Pack from a GST work the same for my GSX? or would have to be from a GSX?

Good choice on the plugs, wires, and gas! Did you drain the gas tank? If it had been down for a while I would. That would also be a good time to install your fuel pump. I would also change the fuel filter asap. The coil packs are the same. Also while you are doing all that I would do a boost leak test. It sounds like you are off to a good start, keep it up!

Thanks I will, :D

I didn't drain the gas tank but the gas was almost empty. But I was just going to drain it once I did the fuel pump and fuel filter and fill up the tank.

Also I'm not sure how to do a boost leak test with a DSM. This is my first turbo one so do you have a graph the same with the coils?

A boost leak test is just pressurizing your intake tract to see where air is escaping. This is very important on turbocharged applications as the intake track is under pressure and any leaks will allow the boost to escape, throwing off your AFR (air/fuel ratio) and causing your turbo to work harder. Here is a simple how to on boost leak tests, keep in mind that you can make your own tester with a couple of parts from home depot.
