I'm asking as I can't find the correct answer to the colors on my ignition harness. I have the wiring harness colors from VFAQ and can't find any threads on this site that match my colors.

I've removed the steering lock and all the steering column accessories, as this car is getting prepped for the strip. I'm planning on putting in toggle switches for the "acc" and Start pushbutton. But the colors on the back of my ignition block are as such and don't match up with some of the colors listed on VFAQ.

So which ones are needed and which ones are not. The colors are as listed on my block are this.

"ACC"-Solid Blue
"R"-Black/ Red stripe, don't know what "R" would stand for??
"IG1"- Black/ White stripe
"AM"-Solid Black, don't know what "AM" would stand for??
"IG2"- Blue/ Red stripe
"ST"- Black/ Yellow stripe

If someone knows what "R" and "AM" are please help:thumb: and also, to hook up the switches anyone care to give me what terminals they'd hook up to which color.
Bare in mind, this car WON'T have a key!!! it'll be purely On switch and Start, so I know there are tons of posts on how to wire up a "push button start", using the original ign harness and piggy backing for the push button, but I think I'm correct in stating that I don't need relays as I'm just bypassing the key. So if I take the wires off the key barrel and hook them up to a couple of momentary switches and "on/off" switches, I don't have to relay anything..correct?

Thanks for the help.

Well I guess I am STUPID!!! I've been researching everything I could for the last 3 hrs and decided to go out to the car again and look at something and found the opposite end of the ignition barrel wires.WTF They are different from the actual plug on the harness. AND to make it worse they are the colors that everyone else has:ohdamn: SO, I guess the search for what is what is over, but the second part of my question still stands if someone would like to contribute. What wires would go to a "acc"switch and which ones to a pushbutton switch.:D

(black and yellow) go to the starter button

(black and white) and (blue and black) to main power switch

(blue) goes to the accesories

all wires get fed from the (white) wire.

I would wire this all with relays if possible, to prevent any overloading of the wires.

Thanks for the reply. Must have overlooked this diagram:ohdamn:

I need help, on the OEM pigtail for the ignition barrel, the harness has NO opposite wire into the harness from the "R" pole on the ignition barrel. Looking on the above schematic, you can see the "R" pole is on the Start side of the switch and it is a deadend. It's not feeding anything, but I'm not getting my switch set up to work properly. So I'm wondering if I crossed the colors somewhere.

Also, based upon what I can see, the Black/White should be powered in the "ON" position and feed the MPI control, which I assume powers the fuel pump 'on' and should be powered until I shut off that switch. Correct?/

You have two options; 1 momentary, and 2 switches Or 1momentary, and 1 pushbutton.

I would use option one.

I'm not sure what the "R" pole is but I feel it's safe to assume its on the schematic to demonstrate that it's unimportant in a dsm.

Thanks, mate. I have to look at my switch set up again (not at home right now). But I'm sure I have a wire crossed somewhere, as I thought my wiring was correct, but right now as it sits, I don't get momentary fuel pump with the 2nd switch gooing 'hot', ONLY when I hit the start switch and it goes 'off' when I release the momentary switch.

I'll not be home for a day or two, so I'll have to rewire my switches and try again.

Cheers for the input.:thumb:

The start switch does activate the fuel pump, out cars are setup s that the entire time the car is cranking, the fuel pump is forced on, the mpi relay has a two coil relay for fuel pump control.

That doesn't tell me if the mpi relay has power, or if the ignition switch is working properly/getting power.

Check:
1. All fuses, ensure proper connections, no visible damage anywhere.
2. On the car side, make sure the white ignition wire has 12v.
3. Test the ignition switch like the fsm states.
4. See if the cel come on when the ignition power is turned on.
5. Verify the ecu gets ignition power on pin 102, its a red wire. On the smallest of the ecu plugs.
6. Verify MPI relay has 12v from hte main fuse, then test its for proper operation as the fsm states.
7. Listen and see if the Mpi relay clicks when turned on. It should supply power to the injectors when it clicks.

That should cover your improperly working ignition switch, and the mpi relay.

Just fyi, Normal mpi operation;

Key on power supplied to ecu
ecu pulls mpi side of relay to ground
boots up ecu completely
S\elf tests CEL
Pulls fuel pump side of mpi relay to ground and primes fuel pump for 5 seconds.

when turned to start, activates mpi relay fuel pump side to ensure maintaining fuel presure till it gets a rpm signal and can keep it on.

you mentioned a couple good points and here's what I've done so far.

set up my switches, for the moment I'm assuming I've piggy backed one of the wires on the wrong side. I'll have to verify my setup is correct when I get home.
BUT, here's what I did before I left town:
Bypassed the stock wires for the pump and hot wired it directly from the battery: it worked. I have a rewire kit on it and it worked before I took the motor out ( a year ago).
Pulled the MPI and tested it per FSM, and tested good.
When poweing up my new set up, got the CEL coming on and then going out ( i'm pretty sure this is normal).
All fuses are good.

So I guess other than the other tests you mentioned, I'm pretty sure everything is intact.

MY biggest concern and I'm sure you'll agree, my battery isn't at 12V anymore, I have had it sitting out and it's showing a terminal reading of about 9V now. I'll have to get it charged back up and see if that helps anything.

I appreciate the help and I'm p'd at the fact I had to leave for a couple of days and would like to trouble shoot this thing, now and not in a couple of days. At least I'm getting my things in order and will be able to run the whole list of checks once I get home.
