command timed out error, dsmlink 2.5

hey guys got dsmlink v2.5 today, connected everything up downloaded all needed software/drivers but keep getting a "command timed out" error. i was told to add this

interByteDelayMillis=40
interCommandDelayMillis=40
cmdReplyTimeoutMillis=1000

but when i try to save the file after editing it in notepad it says i do not have the ability to save files in the dsmlink folder. so how do i edit the PREFS file if i cant save it when im done?

what update files? and also i figured out how to edit it but it still wonht connect

i have continuity on all wires except for the white one (not sure if its supposed to, by looking at the board there is some chip or diode or something in the circuit that may not allow continuity) i have the red wire attached to 12v source and i have my serial to usb adapter drivers installed and working (i think), when i boot up dsmlink it recognizes that the adapter is in port 7 and switches to 7 automaticaly if its not set to it but even still when i hit capture i get a "command timed out" error

also ive tried to contact ecmlink 2 times on seperate emails and still have not recieved a reply from them. and they list no phone number because apparently they respond to emails quickly but its been almost over 24 hours
