I just fired up my 6-bolt and it runs really rough until its warmed up a bit. In all the searches, the only thing I really came up with is the coolant temp sensor. I have a datalogger and have been watching coolant temps and it warms up just fine so I'm assuming thats working. Once its warmed up, it idles beautifully. Any suggestions?

Also, I haven't been able to set base timing to 5* because I just now noticed that my 2g crank pulley doesn't have any timing marks on it. Do I need to get a 1g one, or can I put a mark on my 2g pulley at TDC or whatever the mark is at.

Thanks

With regards to the timing question. Here is how you can put a mark on the crank pulley you have:

1) Take off the crank pulley and belts.

2) Remove the number one cylinder spark plug

3) Use a remote starter (if you don't have one, just get a friend to help) to tap the engine over while you have your finger in the number one spark plug hole as far down as you can get. You should get a vacuum then a blast of air then vacuum then a blast of air. One blast of air will be weaker and it is the exhaust stroke. The other blast should be stronger and that's the compression stroke. This is the one you want. As soon as you feel ths blast from the compression stroke stop cranking the engine.

4) Go the the crank where you removed the crank pulley. Look inside the plastic timing belt cover at the timing mark for the crank. Rotate the crankshaft with a 1/2 breaker bar until you line the crankshaft up with the timing mark.

5) Bolt the crank pulley back on. Use whiteout or some equivalent to put a mark on the side of the crank pulley where it lines up with the TDC mark on the plastic timing belt cover.

6) Now set base timing to 5 BTDC.

So I just make sure #1 cyl on the compression stroke, then line up the crank sprocket timing mark with 5* on the plastic cover and mark the pulley at 5* as well? Sounds easy enough...thanks!

what do you mean there's no mark on your 2g crank pulley? My 97 pulley has the mark and my friends 95 did as well. Look really carefully ... better yet just use a timing light and you'll know right away if there's a mark there or not since you can't miss it with the light working.

Just rotate the crank until cylinders 1 and 4 are at tdc and until the cams are lined up properly. Oil pump doesn't matter for this. Then look down by the timing cover and put a white mark on the pulley by the T on the cover ... not on the 5 degree mark, it MUST be next to the T. Then when you start the engine and hook up a timing light the line you drew at T will need to be set so it appears around the 5 degree mark or whatever sort of timing you want.

I tried it with a timing light and couldn't see anything, then I took it completely off and there is still no mark on it.
