Uxbridge,
My 95 TSI need the rear main seal replaced. I figured while my mechanic had the tranny out I might as well put in a beefier clutch and a lightened flywheel.
I bought a RAM HDX clutch and a Fidanza flywheel to be installed. I talked to the tech departments at RAM & Fidanza. They both assured me the parts will fit together perfectly for this application.
Just before the work was complete my mechanic called me and said the clutch pedal sticks on the floor. You need a new hydraulic system. I persuaded him to adjust the clutch instead. He took my advise and the car worked fine.
The work was done. The TSI drove great. I love the feel of the clutch flywheel combo.
Then out of the blue the car would not go into 2nd gear. The clutch pedal was stuck at the bottom of the floor. I managed to get it working by just pulling it off the floor by hand. I took the car back to my mechanic to find out what was going on. Once again he said I need a new master cylinder, slave cylinder and accumulator. Parts & labor total just under $500.00.
I protested saying, "Just adjust the clutch pedal." I was told because this was an "aftermarket" clutch & flywheel the entire clutch hydraulic system needs to be replaced.
Does anyone know if this info I got is correct? I just doesn’t sound right to me.

I agree with AWDTSiTalon the system does sound like it's leaking or the seals on either the slave cylinder or master cylinder are simply letting the fluid pass them instead of compressing them. The napa master cylinder rebuild kit was $12 and about 1.5 hours worth of time, the slave cylinder is just as easy, 2 bolts and it's out, I would also get rid of the a ccumulator setup and opt for the ss clutch line, it's only like $30 or something like that from SBR. I had the exact same problem and I noticed that I had clutch fluid leaking down the master cylinder push rod, I rebuild the master cylinder and the car drives like new. Also check out this at RRE's website - click here about 3/4 of the way down they have an explination of something called the ghost pedal, when the clutch just hits the floor sporatically, in short it's due to debris in the master cylinder, just rebuild that stuff yourself, you'll have a max of 4-5 hours in it and probably like $150 total. The only real problem you can run into with the master cylinder is that the cylinder walls could be scored from a foreign object, if this is the case you're best bet is just to buy one that is already rebuilt, I think they are like $75 and probably have a core exchange. if you need any info or even a set by step to do the master just PM me.
