Just to the right of the center vents, there's a little switch with what looks like a little guy sitting there with air blowing at his face. The top position has white on top, black on bottom and the bottom position has blue on top, also with black on the bottom. What DOES this switch do??? I can't find any reference to it in my owner's manual, and I can't tell any difference between the 2 settings.

Yeh. The Great Mystery Switch.

It's some kind of fresh/cool air mixer that lets you cool down the center dash vents when the heater's on. Supposedly. After all, who turns on the heater to warm up with? Don't we all want a cold goddamned draft when there's snow on the effing car?

All I can get the damned thing to do is switch from slight cold draft to extreme cold draft. At least it doesn't matter in the summer, the AC's pretty good.

Get yourself an owner's manual off eBay. $10.

Oh, and we don't have Climate Control. We have a knob that turns a flap on the heater core (no water valve) to hot air/no hot air, and a 3-position switch for the AC compressor. It's also unclear what the two positions other than off are supposed to make you think they're doing.

Got an owner's manual :) If the info's in there for that switch, I sure can't find it!

Well, OK, that switch must be broken on mine. If I am using the "vents only", I get "warm" air out of the left center vent, "cool" air out of the right center vent, and "roasting" air out of the side vents. If I switch to any other mode, I get freezing air out of all the vents. That little mystery switch doesn't seem to change anything. Which setting is which?

A/C, what's that? :) I removed mine after all the refrigerant leaked out one summer :(

I don't have a '95 Eclipse manual, but in the '96 it's on page 126 (below).

Now you know why it's the Mystery Switch. It's supposed to "get rid of a glow in the upper half of the body". Well, I've checked, and the wax is still on the roof, and the dome light still works. Beats me. As for cold drafts while the heater's on, I like all of me to be pretty much the same temperature.

Oh. Then you're already beyond hope.

all i have in that position is to put my top down or up :p
Yeah, they finally gave up on the stupid thing. I don't know if it was in 98 or 99, and I don't know if any of the convertibles ever had it (although what the convertibles use for the top mech is the rear window wiper/washer switch location).

Now, then- has anyone ever found an accessory from the factory for that third hole on the left? I know there was nothing for the E/T, and I've not found anything for the Avengers.

I'm so glad i found this thread, even though it is older. It was driving me crazy not knowing what that switch did. I decided to pull out my center vent and this is what i found. There is a long actuating rod with a circle on the end to connect to something. I dug around in my dash but could not figure out what it connects to.

The ducting behind the center vent has a rotating flat piece of plastic on the inside (just inside the mouth of it). On the outside of the ducting, there should be a hole of some sort to put the end of the cable in. I usually leave that end in and disconnect the end to the switch on the bezel if I need to take it out for some reason.

This is nice to know, I have been wondering for a few years what that switch does. :banghead:
