Climate Control Problem

Ok, here is my problem / question. There is a car I am looking at and this HVAC knob doesn't work (SEE PICTURE). The fan switch works to turn the blower on and off, but when you turn the switch from say defroster to vent it doesn't change anything.

Are these controls cable controlled, or are they vacuum / electrically controlled? He said it was just a metal cable that came off and needed to be put back on. Am I going to have to replace the whole control, or is he right about the cable?

On the 1g's its cable controlled. So I'm pretty sure yours is too.
When I switch that you can hear a thunking of it changing where the air is gonna go.

1G's are cable controlled. Check and see what you can find out visually about it. Should be an easy fix if it is just a cable. But you should hear a thunk noise like Scott was talking about when it changes.

They're actually push/pull wires, but yeah, same as cable. You can see what gets moved by looking under the dash, pull the driver's side kick panel on the center console. Your wires are likely bent, or maybe the little clamp screws just came loose.

Thanks everyone. Hopefully this is an easy fix. I just wanted to see if I would have to buy another HVAC control unit or not.

I'm looking at a 98 Tsi so I'm trying to find everything wrong with it to make sure it is a decent deal. My 2gnt is literally in mint condition so I don't want to get something that is in too much worse shape. Wish me luck ...
