So since ive rebuilt the moter there has been this clacking or kind of marbly sound coming from the head area of the motor more when its cold, when it warms up it sound alot better. I doesnt sound like a lifter tic nor a bent vavle though. It has 3g liters with a mild head job. Also when accelerating even at ten pounds it has a clicking noise.Kind of sounds like the wastegate slaming close a few times throughout the pull. Ive checked exhaust leaks. Any andvice would be great.

P.s. I have a small oil leak that seems to slightly drip onto the timing belt, Seems to be from under the cover.(possibly filter housing assembly gasket) But dont beleive that would cause anything like that

THanks for any help Brad,

Mine does the same thing. Put succinctly, our cars tend to sound like sewing machines, even fully built.
What weight oil are you running? 20W50 seems to make it a bit louder on mine, as compared to 10W30. Though I also have a secondary rattle from the A/C fan lacking its bottom bolt (easier to remove for alt replacements... really should just take it out completely).
As for on-accelleration, sure you aren't just knocking?

Should get that oil leak fixed ASAP though. Oil will degrade belts, and you don't want your timing belt to chunk (lose teeth) or tear through.

Im Running 10-30 and the ac is removed. I have a logger and a wideband but it seems like my nock is ok. the one noise goes away was you rev it up or start driving but at idle its always a little there. also ive heard not and it sounds much different. Ive adjusted the boost alll the way down to 8 psi and it still does it.

Im also going to fix that leak soon i ordered the gaskets already
Anything else you could think of.

I have searched several threadds all with no help. I had a clacking noise that I believe was linked to rpm, but certainly not in the bottom end. The frequency i felt meant the top end somewhere. I drove the car for a day, the next day the idle would surge, by the end of that same day the idle was horrible, and i wondered if the car would stall. Next morning car starts rights off... idles like shi*... lot's of scary clicks and clacks (I'm thinkin.... hmmmm... normal for my car huh?...) Drive the car to work, end of day start up late evening, car dies, then won't start. kinda like the first time my ten year old timing belt took a dump. Keep in mind, whole time... that nasty ticking.... so much more pronounced than lifter tick. odly intermitent at times, but definitly with frequency consistant with engine RPM.

Oh... most importantly forgot to mention. did a water pump replacement and removed timing belt and tensioner and reinstalled all by my crappy memory. well my memory left out the major parts fo the tensioner install, and I tried to force the tentioner up with my hand. Stupid stupid stupid :nono: anyway. it aparently held for a couple of days until things started going to crap.

in closing, I had confirmed with a good friend (mechanic) it's common for our type of tensioner design to make a loud clackign noise when not adjusted properly (over extended plunger) because there is way too much slop in the belt, and the tensioner arm is clicking against the hydraulic plunger. As a result, i have some bent valves because the belt slipped about five teeth!!!!!!!!!!, and a lot of work ahead. Good one...

I am not saying all of your non lifter clickety clacks are the tensioner... but experience has proven to me to get dirty early to be sure, and spend that little extra time, and maybe cash to get or make the spanner wrench tool for the tensioner eccentric.

Hope this helped someone. Could have used it myself... :coy:

i put the the motor in myself as well as built it the onlything i didnt do was the machining work. I put the tensioner on with the proper tensioning tool i purchased for the belt. I do a kind of a weird idle though. It will be at 800 sometimes then it would jumo to 1300ish then back down. Cant find a way to fix it replaced everything. Im going to pujj my cover later in the week and check out the timing again. Thanks for the reply, }

Also my car is kind of slugish ever since i put the motor in. Cant get it to pull right, Maybe it is something to do with the timing, I know my base timing is set right. I just thaught i aint got it tuned right after the 18g.
