i lost my baby kate  and i went and got me a lil CRX HF. and was considering getting a b series but thought "i want AWD." so got me a mechanic that said he'll help me do the entire conversion for $1600. was gonna use a b-16 but didnt wanna use a mazda driveshaft and rear diff. so i'm gonna get a 4g63 and use either an EVO or eclipse drivetrain. did some reserch on topics but couldnt find the info i was lookin for to determine this.

Question #1 Is there really a difference between an EVO 4g63 and an Eclipse/talon/laser 4g63? if you remove the turbo off both engines what's the major difference if any? better cam? if it's not that much difference i'll just go get a 1G longblock and build it for the price i'd pay for an EVO engine.

Question #2 since EVERYTHING is gonna have to be redone anyway any ideas on the best car to grab my suspension?

i did the search and also found a lotta people posting all sorts of off-topic stuff. no i'm not dropping an H-22 into it. no i'm not dropping a B-16 or B-18 into it. please no flaming hondas or other cars people drive... just want some input and ideas of how to do this.

thanks

i belive the older EVO engines I-VI use the JDM "cyclone" 4g63 motor. The engines are rated at 220 HP and 210 lbs. tq. I belive this is due to a different bottom end used. The cams might be slightly bigger as well, although do not quote me on that. I would go for the EVO motor being as it is stronger and able to hande more power upgrades. good luck man. that should be a killer swap.

let me get this straight....your going to build an AWD CRX with a 4g63 engine? I cant wait to see one of the DSM Wisemen get a hold of this post and list the bazillion fabrications your going to have to make to have a shot at gettin it to run and stay together. I would love to see this project completed but it sounds more like a pipe dream....good luck bro! WTF

you mean changing the wiring harness, the fuel delivery system, the suspension, the shift linkage, the clutch assembly, motor mounts, axles, brake system, etc.....? yeah the car's gonna be stripped down to the bare chassis, and rebuilt from the ground up. i'm even gonna try to get an eclipse gage cluster to fit. the cross bars are gonona have to be cut and rewelded so that the driveshaft will fit and the rear differential will take up the space where the spare tire goes. the driveshaft itself will have to be cut and rewelded and have a sleeve fit around it to restrengthen.

The Evo 4g63 and US 4G63 are mirror images of each other. US trans on pass side timing on drivers, EVO trans on drivers timing on pass. Good luck! Sounds like a fun project.

yeah i know, but is that the only differences in the engine itself? is the turbo and pistons the only difference that changes performance?

What power level are you talking about? 250 hp? 300 hp? 600 hp? That's going to play a big part. If you want less than 400 hp, a 1st gen block will do just fine and be much easier to find and cheaper.

i'm lookin at the 500-600WHP range when completed..... 550 WHP on an AWD 1900LBS (probably 2300-2400 when done) car. hmmm wonder if i can do an all wheel burn out :D j/k

You aren't going to make 600 hp on either block stock. It would be cheaper to get a 6 bolt block and build it than an evo block. Good luck with your goal...500 hp isnt easy to attain and you have got a lot of reading to do.

Well since you kindly asked me not to bash honda's I wont
But good luck with your dreams

Might I suggest going out with all the money your looking to invest into this project and bying a turbo AWD DSM???
Its going to be a lot less time consuming. It would also look a lot sexier then a CRX

Good luck

I'll throw my .02 in, since a topic similar to this came up on another site I post on sometimes. This guy got an '87 CRX and wanted to throw a B-series in it, like you originally wanted to. This were the replies of the resident Honda experts:

"If I recall correctly there are some major clearance issues with fitting a B series in the old Civics. I could be wrong though."

"You're right, the passenger side has to be either hammered in, or cut, recessed, and boxed in. The transmission sometimes doesn't clear the width with the CRX engine mounting locations."

Now, that's to fit a B-series in, and from my memory of looking at my friend John's Acura B16, it looks to be a bit smaller than the 4G63, so you might have to do some extensive modifications to be able to fit the engine and trans in. Also, due to the difference in wheelbase, you're going to have to custom fabricate a driveshaft.

Interesting project. If you get it started, keep us informed and remember to take plenty of pictures.

Oh, how little you know.
However, I will say you're brighter than any mechanic who'll "help" on this project for $1600.

Bring us pictures when it's done, and we'll re-visit this hare-brained idea.
