well my car developed a weird ticking noise 300 miles after new 2gen transmission install in a 1st gen, with new clutch etc. the ticking went away when i pushed in the clutch so i thought it was something with the tob. however when i went underneath i heard the sound coming from the pressure plate/flywheel area. here is what i found.

my question is :: why did the ticking happen after 300 miles? and why does it go away when i push the clutch down? shouldnt it have always ticked ???

anyone?

So what's the starter drive gear look like?
Did you find the bolt or dowel that made the hole in the bellhousing?

The ticking stopped after you pushed in the clutch because the pressure plate flexed slightly and stopped making contact with whatever put that hole in the bellhousing.

EDIT: Oh I see, its not a hole. I should replace my crappy monitor, it is obvious now looking at it on the computer at work.

ok guys here is what happened the top of the flywheel where it is scraped up in the picture was hitting the top of the bellhousing where the damage is. im just wondering why i only started hearing the ticking after 300 miles. shouldnt i have heard this after 1 mile? should i just sand that bump down? the flywheel bolts are on there good trust me. i know this because i could not remove them hah.

if you look at those pictures again you can see that the spot marked damage on the second pic is a bump on the inside of the transmission housing where the flywheel has been rubing on it.......

the only two things that i can think off the top of my head are check the flywheel bolts to see if all of them are tight. if they are then check the crankshaft to see if you have to much play in the thrust bearings. if the flywheel is loose the sound will go away when you push in the clutch because the TOB is pushing the flywheel back up to where it should be. if there is too much play in the thrust bearing you basically get the same thing, the TOB and clutch are pushing the crank back into the engine where it belongs. either was sounds to me like something is loose.

mike i understand what your saying but this is a 2nd gen transmission in a 1st gen. the 1st gen transmission does not have a bump where this one is at. so im thinking that the ticking is simply the flywheel hitting the bellhousing, and when i push in the clutch in it could slightly change the flywheel by a tiny amount which alters the sound. that is my guess.

right but you said that your car didn't start making that noise until you had been driving it for 300 miles... if the only difference in the transmissions are that the 1G's don't have that bump in the inside of them then you should have herd something from the very first time you started the car. if not a clicking noise then defiantly a grinding noise. and you would think that by now if it were just the a little bit of a difference in how the flywheel sits whether the clutch is in or out, then it should have been done wearing its self down by now to where it isn't making the noise any more....

yea thats what i was thinking aswell. i did not have a dowel pin in there i bought one and its in now. do you think that could of caused this?

i am sitting here trying to think in my head what the flywheel and crank look like where they mate up on the 4g63. all i seem to see in my head is how my Gm engine sits. if there is enough slop in how the flywheel and crank mate up i suppose it would allow for the flywheel to slide to one side and rub on whatever is to closest to it. in that case a yea a dowel pin would probably would help.... but if that were the case and the flywheel shifted i would imagine you would have a hell of a vibration while the car was running. question.... do those marks on the flywheel go all the way around or are they primarily one one side?

they go all around on the flywheel. this never happened in my old transmission but then again there was no bump to hit. i really dont wanna think that my crank and stuff is loose! its scares me haha. the flywheel is on there really good with locktight. maybe when i push the clutch in the transmission is shifting a little bit possibly because of the dowel? what do you think? AND the car seems a little rough at around 2k rpm in any gear.

if the marks are all the way around then your flywheel hasn't slid off to one side, that would cause your car to vibrate like a SOB anyway not just at 2k RPM. when you were talking dowel i guess i was thinking either the ones on the flywheel that lined up the pressure plate or the one in the crank that lined up the flywheel. you should have two lining up the engine to the transmission. if you didn't have any then i suppose that could cause an issue.

mike i started it today but now i have a new problem. the starter grinds realllly bad and pops like it is just slamming the flywheel teeth. everything is installed the way it was before! but since i added this dowel pin now its really bad i even shimmed it by 1 bushing and its the same... im getting frustrated.
