Saskatoon,
my check engine light as turned on, and when i asked someone they said that its just one of the things with these cars, and told me that it was a sensor that was no longer functioning right, i believe he mentioned something about a knock sensor or somethin along those lines?

Do you not have a logger ? Mods without monitoring :nono: . A friend with a logger to check the code or an auto parts store to check it . OBDI .

yea take it to autozone.o reilys, advanced auto.or any other and they will check it for free.

post the code here and we can help ya out

They only check OBD2 cars.

Long time no see 91laser LOL. You could pull the codes yourself if you wanted to. This link shows you how:
ECU Code Checking

Has anyone tried this?? I'v used vfaq.com for a couple different things now and its seems that site is either hit or miss.

That link shows the exact method to reading the codes on a 1g - so yes, it works.

You can use a buzzer (as suggested in the link), LED light, or volt meter to display the short and long pulses.

check you coolant temp sensor wires, they sometimes break and that will do it, or maybe an o2 sensor. There isnt too many things that trip a CEL on 1g's, especially if it still runs.

Joe

I just put a thermostat in a couple days ago, the coolant temp wires looked good from what I could see, I'l double check it tonight. The o2 sensor was my orginal thought because the light has came on like 2 or 3 different times in the last week, it will stay on for a bit then it will go away. It varys how long the light will stay on. Thanks for the help.

This is a good place for you to start learning about your car.

Go look at the VFAQ or the older FAQ and read the code.

It's not one of those things with these cars, that's just a sign of somebody you shouldn't be be taking advice from in the future.

If you don't understand what the code is telling you post it and somebody can explain what the ECU is trying to tell you is wrong.

Has anyone every actually done the steps on vfaq.com to get the check engine light code. I'm trying to do it right now and I found the dianostics port. There is 5 pins in the connector. I'v tried all on them touching them with the positive and negative of the buzzer. Tried it both with the key on and off, not sure if its suppose to be on or off it dosent say anything about that. Well I cant get the buzzer to make any sound. Note, the buzzer is brand new just bought. Does anyone have experience doing this? Any help would be appreciated.

The key must be on since the ECU needs to be running.

The DLC is normally attached to the fuse box and when it is pin 1 is the upper left pin and pin 12 the lower right. You note the key for the connector is on the left side.

Check your buzzer and make sure it works when connected to 12v. If you don't get anything at the DLC connector check to make sure that the ECU is turning on.

Don mean to thrad jack, but, I also have a check engine light, was tdl by previos owner it was because th ecar has no cat. My prvious car (Mazda RX7) did the same once I removed the cat, anyway to fix it? Also ist a '90 Laser RS Turbo AWD with a ton of mods.

Having no cat will not throw a check engine light, though not hooking the ground back up the the exhaust piping might.

I just tried that and still nothing.

Which pins do the positive and negative go to for the buzzer?

The pins look like this

Sorry for the change of thoughts

I don't know if its a problem or not on my car, but my CEL will come on when I start my car sometimes and then as soon as I touch the gas pedal, it goes away. A family buddy and long DSMer told me it has something to do with the cold. Any other thoughts?

Now are you sure it's AWD? Seeing as though they did not not make a Laser AWD until 92 :shhh:

Im, trying to do this now but I dont undertand the counting procedure. Its a dumb question but how many pulses am I suppose to count? Do I just need the first 8 pulses then add the 4 pulses in between? EX: L-S\-L-S-L-S/-L-L...so thats 22?
