I just sold my 1991 Eagle Talon N/T for $1200 and got a steal of a deal on a 1995 Eclipse GS for $800. The only things wrong with it are the DS fender is a little dented up and the clear coat is peeling on the front bump and DS fender. Anyways i was talkin to some friends and someone said that the crank, rods, and pistons from a 2.4l stratus (or whatever came with the 2.4l) would bolt into the 420a block and essentially make it a cheap 2.4l stroker. then someone else said that the TB from the 2.4l motor would bolt on and it is a little bigger. So i was just wanting to know if any of this is actually do-able. Since im still in high school i dont really have the option to just give it a try and hope it will work, ya know. any help is appreciated. thanks.

You say cheap, so you will get cheap. I have never heard of something like that but if it were true, wouldn't you think we would already know about it?

If you can't afford to rebuild your engine the RIGHT way with either wiseco or JE pistons and eagle rods than, well, don't do it until you can afford it.

That is just my and many others' .02.

agreed, you can make a frankenstien engine but it is much better to do it the right way, or else get a short block that your head and tranny bolt onto that is 2.4 and install that. and i would build that up incase you ever decide to boost her down the road.

ya i agree 100% that it is better to do it right then to piece an engine together. what 2.4l block will work my head and trans? im new to the 2g's so im just tryin to figure out all my options on motor setups and stuff. thanks

As everyone else said, cheap will only get you as far as what you put in it, as with suspension (found out hard way) but the 2g n/t motor is very different then the 1g n/t

the 1g was based off the 4g63, where as the 2g are from dodge with the 420a motor

For motor setups, there are always turbo gets they offer from Hahn, and others, as well as just nitrous.Just have to be careful with the turbo setup as it cant hold as much boost as a stock turbo motor....well not stock at least(internal wise)

You can't just swap the rotating assembly, you'd need to swap the whole block. I can never remember the exact years they were available, but I know they're in some Stratuses, Sebrings, Breezes and Cirruses ("cloud" cars).

The swap isn't plug-and-play, so do some research first. You'll need to fabricate some parts, and source others from SRT-4s or other cars. Speaking from experience, I don't think I would've been ready to do something like this when I was in high school... between driving to school and work, and being poor, I couldn't have afforded an engine swap of any kind. I was, however, able to manage a turbo kit; something you should also be able to do.

And the only TB swap I know of is from a 4.0L Jeep.

hmmm... i was interested in goin all motor but from what you guys are sayin it would be easier to just go with a good rebuild and turbo setup. When i do rebuild it should i get lower compression pistons or will new OEM pistons be alright? Im only wantin to run like 10-15 lbs. of boost, maybe a little more. oh ya... one more thing, how much can these motors be bored out and still have good, safe wall thickness? Thanks for all the help

Not enough to enjoy any appreciable gains. Just bore it as needed.

Oh snap! El Do-RAY-do in the house. Good to hear some 2GNT tech is making it's way to the small towns in KS. Six years ago, when I lived in Wichita, I couldn't find anybody into DSMs. A year after I moved, I knew about half a dozen guys.

As was already mentioned...

  • 2.4 swap requires bottom end from "cloud car." You *can* use a PTCruiser block as well, but you can't use the SRT4 engine, so just forget about that in advance.
  • There is extensive fabrication involved. If you want to see what it takes, check out the advanced forum on 2GNT.com. There's more than a few detailed threads over there about it.
  • Bore the cylinders only as needed to ensure concentricity. You'll never gain enough displacement to make going nuts with a bore worthwhile. (Unless you'd be fine with rubbing through to the water jacket in the first five minutes of idling the fresh motor.)
  • Stock rebuild will be the cheapest, but it won't handle 10-15psi of boost.
  • PSI doesn't mean SHIT unless you can provide information related to the turbo or supercharger pushing that boost. You think 10psi of water through your garden hose is as much water as 10psi through a fire hose?
  • The best bet is to source a spare block, rebuild that while you drive your car, then swap the engines in a weekend. Northwest Imports in Wichita had an EXCELLENT selection of stuff back when I lived in Wichita. You might look them up if all else fails. There are more junkyards here than there are McDonalds in Wichita and it's some seriously slim pickings out here. I miss Northwest Imports.
  • Do your homework and be that one guy in El-do who knows what the f*ck he's talking about. In no time at all, you'll see just how many two-bit, fast-and-furious-wannabe poseur doosh nozzles like to run their mouths in your hometown.

Good luck with the project.

ya i have been tryin to find another 420a block but havent had any luck (only been lookin for the past week). Theres actually quite a few guys here in town that know what there doin. I guy i know named Ryan has a low 13 second RS-T car as his DD. Hes gunna be the main person i go to looking for help. I havent ever heard of Northwest Imports. Do you remeber what street it was on? Thanks

OEM pistons would just be the same as you have now except new, which would mean could run 5-8 lbs safely newew pistons would be able to run longer. For that mean lbs I would consider the low compression. my .02
