I just bought my car a 94 Eagle Talon Tsi AWD for 400 dollars. The car runs perfect, except I hear a chattering sound when I let the clutch out at slower speeds. My buddy said it was my throw out bearing and that it needed greased or to have a new one put in. Is there any way to grease it without ripping out my tranny or should I just buy a new one?
This is my daily driver and I need some help. That sound is pissing me off.

Only way to get to it is to pull the tranny. And it would be more cost effecting in the long run to just buy a new one. Normally around 20-30.-- depending on where you buy it.

Is the car shuddering while the clutch is released, this could be a warped clutch disk and pressure plate. Might want to get a more professional opinion.

The car does not shudder when I push the clutch in but now its getting hard to put in gear especially when im shifting into 3rd. I checked my fluid levels and they were a bit low, so I added fluid. This helped some but it still does it once and awhile. But the weird thing is that it is not grinding when I cant find 3rd it acts like it is not there, then if I put it back into neutral and try again It goes right in. Is this a linkage issue? Or am I looking at a new tranny? :| Thanks for your help :thumb:

ide like to know if he doesnt do anythign about the throwout bearing will it do any long term damage?

Yes and no, it depends on a variety of factors. If it's just the contact face of the T/O bearing where it contacts the pressure plate fingers it can wear a groove in them. If the bearing is starting to fail this too can do same along with bearing failure and loss of clutch's ability to release the transmission from spinning.

With the clutch T/O fork withdrawn from the pressure plate it might be possible to squirt a small amount WD-40 at the T/O bearing and effect a change if it's just a minor rust condition. The danger here is contaminationg the disk and causing slippage but I've been able to do this with other cars.

I did note the original poster stated that it doesn't shudder when pushing it in but said nothing about when releasing. I would suggest they do properly bleed and adjust the clutch to prevent the problems described with 3rd gear. This could be shifting linkage adjustment or worn bushings which they will have to inspect.

That usually means you have a leak some where. Locate and fix the leak, bleed the system really well using the correct method and see if situation improves.

Went to Advanced and picked a new throw out bearing up for 32.99. Had it put in and now more chattering. YYYYEEEEEEAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH :rocks:

Tell me you checked the clutch, oh please please tell me you checked the clutch.

I can only hope that it's the engine mounts that need replacing. I wish you had discussed this more before concluding in having the bearing replaced. Somebody didn't do right by you in not telling you to check the clutch while the tranny was out.

Did you discuss this with the people who did the job, did they tell you that it was the T/O bearing? Did you drive the car and demonstrate the problem or did you just tell them to replace it without diagnosing it? :(

We can toss out ideas here but cannot feel or get a sensation for how it drives, for this you need a professional with experience in the car with you and there just no substitute especially when spending this much labor. This really upsets me but I guess you have to learn somehow.

GTM
