Charcoal canister in gas tank?

I planned on deleting my emissions and while doing some research I came across different locations for the charcoal canister. I read that for the 98 FWD dsm's it is in the gas tank.

1) Is this true?

2) If so, how would I go about doing a full emissions delete?

"To clear up the confusion:

95-97 FWD - charcoal canister under battery
98-99 FWD - charcoal canister in gas tank
95-97 AWD - charcoal canister under battery
98-99 AWD - charcoal canister in driver side of front bumper"

And I hear gas mileage isn't too much worse, and to not throw a code you need to leave the solenoids plugged in. What could I use to make a blockoff plate?

You were right, it's in the gas tank. Best bet would be disconnecting all the lines that go to the front and putting a little breather filter(s) on it.

There are dozens of sites that sell blockoff plates, or if you happen to find a 1.8l 1G they have an oem blockoff plate. IIRC.

mine was under my battery tray. WAS. who cares about mpg anyway, this is a toy. its a weekend car for me. but i seriously doubt the mpg will be effected much, if any.

I will try to look at it then. Maybe I will just do everthing I can with emissions and ignore the charcoal canister, if I can.

It's strange but apparently true that '98/'99 FWD's have the charcoal canister inside the gas tank. There's a hard line that comes through the firewall underneath the battery tray. This vent line from the gas tank is part of the EVAP system. I ended up removing everything EVAP related under the hood leaving only the open end of the vent line. To this I attached a short piece of vacuum hose with a check valve in it which opens to allow pressure out of the tank. The valve was part of the original EVAP plumbing that I had just removed. I don't know if this is a good or bad idea or if it provides any benefit at all (it seems to make sense in my head :hmm:). Some attach a mini breather filter at the end of the hose.

With the underhood plumbing removed and the EVAP solenoid plugged in I would usually get a CEL for the EVAP. But it didn't seem to affect the way the car ran. Unplugging the solenoid didn't seem to have any noticeable effect. But I should say that my tune was off during these times so the car was running a bit crappy regardless. There was no obvious change in gas mileage but I wasn't closely monitoring it.
