Alright I tried doin a search but couldn't find anything that had all my problems in it. Anyway I have a 98 gst and it's pretty stock. Just regular bolt ons, stock motor, stock turbo, etc. The car died on me today and I jumped it and it ran again. I parked the car for maybe an hour and I couldn't get it to start back up even by jumping it. The car has like no voltage right now. Some of the lights in the car still work like the trunk light and when I open the door the light comes on and if I put the key in I'll get the oil light and brake light etc. but they're really dim. Before this happened I noticed my lights in my gauge cluster would be dim at idle and when the car gets reved up they would be bright again. Also if I use a turn signal the lights in the car will flicker in synch with the turn signal. Car never turned off while I was driving or anything. I'm guessing the alternator and battery have gone bad but is there anything else that sounds like it could have gone bad?

I doubt the starter's bad already cause it was replaced in the past year and I just rewired the whole ignition a month and a half ago. When I hook up jumper cables the lights in my car go back to looking normal and when I go to turn the key it'll kinda sound like the car is about to crank but then it just dies out. Horn doesn't work nothing. It has to be a problem related to the battery and alternator. I'm sure both of them have gone bad or about to go bad. I have no problem changing out the both of them but is there anything else I should change while I'm at it cause I'll cry if I change it all out and still have to go back and buy more parts.

try to roll it and start it while on gear ( second gear ) just roll it on until you get some speed and release the clutch when u r on gear ( it should start and it will indicate on the dash board the battery sign if there is something wrong with the battery . but i suspect the alternator ( check the belt of the alternator )

alternator or Battery or maybe both of them.

good luck :thumb:

Alot of the time when a battery start's going out, the alternator has to work harder to try and charge it, and that causes the alternator to die as well. I would pull the battery/alternator take them to autozone and have them both tested at no charge, and replace belts why I was in there. but if there both bad you can not push start your car. and I have had starters go out in less then a year.

It is most likely the alternator. I know when my alternator was going, the coolant, brake, and battery lit up really dim but when I stepped on the gas, they'd go off. Changed the alternator and it hasn't happened since. Not sure if it's the same for a 2g.

yea I tried doing that too and I had no luck in getting the car to turn on. There's absolutely no juice left in the car. I guess I'll change out the alternator and battery and take it from there. Hopefully it starts back up.

2point3Tsi Get them tested, alternator and battery, its free. If it is the alternator replace it with the gm one, it involves swapping the alternator plugs but you can get them new too. I would highly recommend this, if your not going to do a new gm go cheap and get one from the yard.

yes i would say so also

good luck

As others might have stated previously...just get your battery and alternator tested at a Checker Auto or someplace local. It'll be free. You'll have to leave your battery with them for about an hour, but they'll put it on a slow charger and test it. If it doesn't retain it you'll need a new one. My bet is its your battery, your alternator should be fine.
