carbon build up

i took off my exhaust manifold and when i was looking at the hot end of my turbo i noticed it looked pretty gross (see picture), i'm new to turbo charged cars and was wondering if this was normal or acceptable. i was thinking about cleaning it out with my dremmel but thought i should ask around before i did something stupid.

Carbon build up is normal in an exhaust.

would it be a bad idea to use a rotary tool to take some of it off? i'm thinking it would be a waste to have a decent exhaust system and have so much restriction before it even gets there

It's really not that much, but I can't gauge anything off of the small picture. If you want to clean it out, then take the turbine housing off and do it that way. You don't want chunks hitting the turbine when it starts up.

i was going to run the shopvac right next to the dremmel to suck all the debris out as i cleaned, but taking the housing off would probably be the best idea. haha cutting corners is never good. thanks for the tips

Could stuff in a rag where it would cover the lower part of that opening so the junk ground off with the dremel doesn't go into the turbine chamber... then, tip it upside down to shake out the filings before you take out the rag ...

an old method of cleaning carbon that people used to do with diesel engines is when the engine is hot and warmed up they would pour a little water into the intake and let the cool liquid react with the hot carbon and it will fracture it.

Carbon is like a rock when it gets to that start. Like anything in the world if you super heat it and then rapidly cool it, it will crack and fracture.

I am not suggesting that you spray water into you engine and use this method, maybe you can heat up the carbon in the hotside of the turbo in an oven or something then spray some water on the carbon to crack it.

why dont you try seafoam im not sure if it will reach that far but its still good to ues for the rest of the motor
