My buddy is having a problem with his 1997 GST. The car will not crank over whatsoever. The starter tested good, the relay behind the stereo is good, the teeth on the flywheel are good, and we replaced the battery. Also, the crank turns easily by hand. When we turn the key, it "clinks" like the starter is ingauging but not turning the flywheel. Can anyone tell us why it will not crank over?

Thanks in advance,

Mac

try to manually engage the starter, there is a little plug on the starter, unplug it and hold a wire to it (or you can crimp a spade type connector) and touch the battery with the other end , that will manually activate the starter. i know you said it tested good but ive had things test good and they werent at all.

if it does manually start then theres an electrical issue elsewhere.

it will turn over but wont start unless the key position is on ( however the key can be off and it will still turn on just not crank.)

I agree with Compression on this. If that does not work then even though your starter tested good the starter solenoid does not sound like its engaging the Bendix. A quick and easy fix replace it if jumping it does not work, did you by any chance check the ring gear on the flywheel?

We all forgot to add to ensure your connections at the battery are tight, and the engine ground is clean, aswell at the positive cable going the the starter.

I imagine this was not the case, and the starter is infact still bad, figured the info should be presented regardless.
